2018 NBA Rookie Power Ranking – Their Performance So Far This Season

2018 NBA Rookie Power Ranking - Their Performance So Far This Season

The first three weeks of the NBA season has belonged to three rookie ballers. Trae Young, Deandre Ayton, and Luka Doncic have separated themselves from the other names of their rookie class. It is not a surprise these three names are at the top of the Mybookie.ag odds to win Rookie of the Year. Can they keep it up throughout the season? Who is about to fall? And mostly, who has been the biggest disappointment? Let’s see how the rookies have done so far early in the year. Living up to the hype…

Trae Young – Atlanta Hawks

Trae Young 35 pointsWhen experts and fans start calling you the “next Steph Curry” you either embrace it and live up to the hype or the pressure is going to get you. Trae Young hasn’t felt any pressure in the first month and has proven to be as good as advertised. He’s averaging 19.0 points per game while playing over 30 minutes every night.

Mybookie.ag had him +700 to win Rookie of the Year before the start of the season. His odds now are at +500. The biggest upside he has is his three-point shot hasn’t fallen yet. He’s shooting 28% from long distance. When Trae Young gets going from three points, his numbers will rise up, and it will be hard to stop the hype.

DeAndre Ayton – Phoenix Suns

DeAndre Ayton is a big man treasure for the Suns. The oddsmakers had him at +260 to win ROY before the season started and he’s currently at +250. That’s pretty much the best value we will get from Ayton and the Suns all season. He’s learning to impact the games beyond points and rebounds. He has recorded four games this season with five assists or more. Ayton is averaging 10.9 rebounds per game along 15.9 points.

The other night he recorded 18 rebounds against the Raptors and had perhaps the most impressive performance of his young NBA career. The one thing Ayton has against him is he’s outdated. The league belongs to the outside shooters now. As impressive as his 59% from the field percentage is, he needs to evolve into something more than just a big man. The good news for him is he has plenty of time to do so.

Luka Doncic – Dallas Mavericks

Call me a believer already. I think Luka Doncic will end up winning the ROY award. It is mostly because he impacts so many things on the floor. His tenure with Real Madrid made him the most complete player of this rookie class. Doncic has a green light to do as much as he needs in the Mavericks offense. He’s taking 15 shots per night and scoring 47.7% from the field. The Slovenian averages 19.8 points per game while helping with 6.5 rebounds. We all wanted to see if his game could translate to the NBA. I think he answered the bell already. Doncic was listed +300 to win the rookie of the year award before the season, and now we can find him at +160. If you are thinking about betting on Doncic, the time is now. He’s only going to get better.

Marvin Bagley III – Sacramento Kings

It’s hard to call a player a disappointment after a month of competition, but when you were picked second in the NBA Draft, the expectations are high. Marvin Bagley III hasn’t done anything impressive so far, and he owes us a big night to get us fans excited. Bagley III started the season with +450 odds to win the ROY award. Those numbers skyrocketed at +1400 entering November. Those odds are only going to get higher and higher with every game he plays.
