Teams You Can Pass On From The Start

Obviously, given the odds, you can determine that both Northwestern and Nebraska are easy to dispell. The Wildcats finished the season at just 8-22, while the Cornhuskers are an even worse 7-24.

The bad news continues for Nebraska after it was released over the weekend that their best player, point guard Cam Mack, had been suspended indefinitely.

The team responded by losing to Minnesota, which finished 14-16, by 32 points and surrendering 107 total points in regulation time.

Speaking of the Golden Gophers, you can go ahead and put them from your mind as well. They are not void of talent; they just aren’t going to win this tournament. Minnesota was just 3-8 in its final 11 games of the season and has had a difficult time closing out games.

Daniel Oturu is talented, and Marcus Carr has been a revelation, but you would be better off taking the Purdue Boilermakers at +2000 than the Gophers at +4000.

Favorites To Win The Big 10 Tournament

This is what makes the Big Ten so much fun: each team from Maryland to Wisconsin can win this tournament.

Wisconsin is the top seed in the event but is fourth in terms of betting favorites. The Badgers have not lost since Feb. 5 (to Minnesota coincidently) and finished 21-10 after a 5-5 start to the season.

Not coincidently, that is when Micah Potter, a transfer from Ohio State, became eligible. The 6-10 big man averaged roughly 10 points and six rebounds per game while shooting over 45% from distance.

He, along with leading scorer Nate Reuvers and Aleem Ford, make up a very formidable frontcourt for Greg Gard. The Wisconsin Badgers +700 are very tempting.

Michigan State: The Hottest Team

The Spartans were the preseason No. 1 in the entire nation but suffered through injuries and personal tragedy early in the season. After falling out of the Top 25 at 16-8, they have come together to finish 22-9 and defeated an outstanding Ohio State team on Sunday to wrap up the season.

They have the best player in the event in Cassius Winston and a coach in Tom Izzo who won the tournament four times in the 2010s, including last season.

Consider The Maryland Terrapins As Well

The Maryland Terrapins seemed to have this conference locked up just a couple of short weeks ago but stumbled down the stretch to lose their grasp. The Terrapins were able to pull it together over the weekend, thoroughly beating Michigan in College Park in a 13-point game that wasn’t as close as the margin of victory may suggest.

Anthony Cowan Jr. is a tremendous point guard, and Jalen “Stick” Smith will find his way into some All-American discussions, but the concern is with their coach. Mark Turgeon may have the most talent in this tournament, but can he coach them to the title?

The Rest Of The Teams Competing In The Big 10 Tournament

I know I said that there are a lot of teams that can win this event, but Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Purdue, Ohio State, and Penn State all have significant flaws and should be chosen with an abundance of caution. With the Wolverines, if Isaiah Livers doesn’t play well, they typically have a difficult time getting things done on the offensive end of the floor.

Iowa is the exact opposite of Michigan, as the Hawkeyes will score their points, but they also allow nearly 0.90 points per possession on defense, placing them in the 36th percentile.

Penn State, Illinois, Purdue, and Ohio State have all had their moments this season, but predicting what they will do game to game is basically a grab bag. Your hand may come back with a million bucks or a live hand grenade.

Our Pick To Win The 2023 Big 10 Tournament

Michigan State Spartans +275 would be my favorite for this tournament, and they have decent value especially when compared to the favorites in some other conferences. It would certainly be worth it to sprinkle a little bit on Wisconsin Badgers at +700 and Purdue Boilemakers at +2000

The Boilermakers have all the parts to make a run in this tournament, but they, just like those four mentioned above, are incredibly inconsistent. However, if you are going to swing for the fences, they would be my long shot selection.

Maryland probably has the most talent, but at nearly the same odds as Michigan State, you are better off just taking the safe option in the Spartans unless you enjoy heartburn and frustration.
