2019 MDL Disneyland DOTA 2 Paris Betting Preview, Odds & Tips

MDL DOTA 2 Paris - Featured

MDL DOTA 2 Paris - IntroFor the first time ever, the Mars DOTA 2 League (MDL) plays host to a tournament outside of China. The MDL Disneyland Paris Major kicked off on May 4 and is now in its latter stages. The event is DOTA Pro Circuit’s fourth Major of the 2018-19 season and pits the 16 best teams in the world against one another with $1,000,000 in prize money and DPC points up for grabs.

With only one other major left on the competitive calendar this season, teams are desperate for DPC points in hopes of qualifying for The International 2019 (TI9).

What Is The MDL Disneyland DOTA 2 Paris Major?

MDL Disneyland Paris is the first-ever major DOTA 2 event held in France and takes place inside the Disney Events Arena May 4-12. The 16 teams qualified through regional qualifiers in Europe, China, North America, South America, CIS, and Southeast Asia. Swedish outfit Ninjas in Pyjamas (37.29) earned an automatic bid at OGA DOTA PIT Minor in April.

Round robin group play took place on May 4 and 5 with the top two teams in each group of four advancing to the upper bracket playoffs. The bottom two teams in each group were sent to the lower bracket playoffs. The playoffs, which run May 6-12, use a double-elimination format. All matches are best of five except the Grand Finals (Bo5) and the first round of the Lower Bracket (Bo1).

MDL DOTA 2 Tournament Best Teams – The Field

A stacked competing field included the top five finishers from The International 2018, DOTA 2’s world championship event held last August. Defending world champs Team OG (24.54) were joined by heavy hitters PSG.LGD (3.10), Evil Geniuses (19.44), Team Liquid (5.67), and Virtus.pro (4.33) in Paris with 15,000 total Pro Circuit Points on the line.

Vici Gaming – High Performing Team

Vici Gaming DOTA 2China’s Vici Gaming entered the tournament as one of the hottest teams in professional DOTA 2 having recently won the StarLadder ImbaTV DOTA 2 Minor and DreamLeague Season 11 in March. They currently sit in third place in the DOTA Pro Circuit Rankings behind Virtus.pro and Team Secret and had Pinnacle’s third-best odds (3.15) prior to the start of the tournament.

Team Secret – Among The Favorites

Team Secret DOTA 2Team Secret (2.46) was the tournament favorite and already punched a ticket to TI9. After finishing atop the Group B standings, Team Secret knocked off PSG.LGD, 2-1, in the Upper Bracket first round. They’re 1.289 favorites to beat Team OG (3.670) in the second round on May 10.

Upper Bracket Filled With Talent

The other Upper Bracket second round match-up, also scheduled for May 10, features Evil Geniuses and Ninjas in Pyjamas. North America’s EG is expected to advance and is a 1.289 favorite. NiP, 3.100 underdogs, failed to earn a bid to Disneyland Paris during tournament qualifying, only to later earn a qualification at OGA DOTA PIT Minor last month. Currently seventh in the DCS rankings, NiP is a fringe squad looking to book a spot at TI9. Despite being underdogs, they knocked off Vici in the first round and should give EG a run for their money.

Juicy Lower Bracket Match-Ups

With so many good teams in one tournament, there was bound to be some juicy Lower Bracket matches and that’s exactly what we’ve got. Vici will meet The International 2017 champions Team Liquid and PSG.LGD faces Virtus.pro in Lower Bracket third round match-ups.

The Favorite And The Underdog

Vici are slight 1.735 favorites to 2.120 Liquid with a 1.5 handicap, while Pinnacle has tipped Virtus.pro (1.833) to edge out PSG.LGD (1.990) in a super tight 1.5-handicapped match.

Team Liquid are underdogs but are currently in 12th place in the DCS rankings and in dire need of points. Liquid have not changed their roster since their 2017 world championship campaign and retain loads of experience. Watch out for an upset here.

VirtusPro vs PDG.LGD – A Match With Fireworks

Virtus.pro have already booked a spot for TI9 and face a stacked PSG.LGD squad still looking to qualify for the world championship. With odds as tight as they are and elimination on the line, look out for fireworks in this one. PSG.LGD could absolutely advance if Virtus.pro are not sharp.

Best Teams To Bet On – Who Are You Betting On?

Team Secret and Evil Geniuses are 1.357 favorites in their Upper Bracket second round matches and should advance to meet one another in the Upper Bracket Finals. There’s little to suggest Secret stumbles against the American outfit en route to the Grand Finals, where they’ll meet the Lower Bracket champion.

Fans would salivate at a likely VP/Vici Lower Bracket fourth round match-up with the winner moving on to play EG in a Lower Bracket final. VP and Vici are both capable of knocking off EG to meet Secret in the Grand Final, but would either have enough in the tank to defeat Secret twice? VP took down Secret 2-1 in their last meeting at DreamLeague and Vici are the most recent major winners having defeated VP in the DL Grand Final in March.

Coming up from the Lower Bracket to defeat the Upper Bracket champion twice is never easy, and when it’s a team as strong as Secret it’s even harder. Team Secret have put themselves in an excellent position and should take home the title on Sunday.
