NFL Week 2 Betting Preview

NFL Week 1 is in the books. It was one of the most entertaining opening weeks I can remember with five underdogs winning outright. Week 2 has even better games line up for this weekend.

Before going deep into week 2, take a quick look at of TNF betting pick for the game between the Buccaneers and the Panthers.

Which Team Is the Biggest Favorite For NFL Week 2?

The game between the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins will have on the field the best team in the NFL against the worst. The spread at opened with New England as a 15-point favorite. Since it opened, it has only gone up.

The Patriots Are Now Division Favorites

The Patriots are now a 19.5-point favorite on the road against their AFC East rivals. It’s the biggest point spread for a road favorite since New England closed as a 19-point favorite over the Baltimore Ravens in 2007.

The crazy part about this spread is after looking at what both teams showed in week 1; it might not be big enough.

Let me get this straight. We spent the last seven months trying to figure out if Lamar Jackson can become a solid passing QB in the NFL, right? And as soon as he goes off against the worst team in the NFL the debate is suddenly settled? It feels like an overreaction.

Let’s face it; the current Miami Dolphins are borderline a professional football team. Barely. The franchise is in an embarrassing tanking mode that delivered a well- deserved 59-10 loss against the Ravens last week.

That doesn’t mean Baltimore’s offense is all that. The jury is not out on Lamar, yet. Arizona, on the other side, came back from an 18-point deficit to end up tied.

Rookie QB Kyler Murray

Rookie QB Kyler Murray got his feet wet in the second half, completing 18-28 passes for 183 and two scores. The fourth-quarter comeback against the Detroit Lions avoided what felt like an inevitable loss.

Murray had a first half to forget but bounced back like the talented QB he is. I’m not sold on Baltimore simply because the win on Sunday was due to facing one of the worst teams we have seen in the last decade, especially talent-wise.

We tend to overreact after week one, and the 13-point spread feels too big. The Ravens should see a more significant challenge against Arizona this week. The Cardinals have playmakers on defense, unlike Miami.

Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1) vs. Houston Texans (0-1)

It’s easy to run away from the Jaguars now that the team will be without QB Nick Foles for at least the first half of the season. But his replacement Gardner Minshew is not one of those quarterbacks that is afraid to throw the football.

The rookie is used to sling it. Last season his alma matter Washington State was a passing offensive machine under head coach Mike Leach.

Minshew Against Kansas City

Listen, Minshew entered the game against Kansas City without much preparation and completed 22 of 25 passes for two touchdowns and a pick. I fully expect him to be ready to compete against Houston with a week to get prepared.

The Jags defense also won’t be as bad as in week one. Jacksonville’s defense is talented, but it was embarrassed by one of the best offenses in the NFL. A divisional matchup against the Texans is a far better matchup for the defensive unit.

Houston is also coming off a very emotional loss in New Orleans. The team will be on a short week, which is never a good thing when thinking about betting a big spread like the 9-points the Texans are getting.

The Minnesota Vikings had one of the most impressive wins of the weekend by beating the Atlanta Falcons 28-12. The performance was so dominant, the 12 points from Atlanta got to the scoreboard during garbage time.

Yet, the challenge to go to Lambeau Field and try to leave with a win will tell us a lot about the Vikings. Minnesota ran for 172 yards against Atlanta last week. I can’t see that happening against the Packers’ new brand defense.

Green Bay invested plenty of money during free agency trying to add great players on defense. Last week on the road, the team held Chicago to three points and just 46 yards rushing the football.

The Packers Offense

The Packers should be a lot better on offense as well. Green Bay recorded only 213 total yards in Chicago, but the Bears defense is a top-of-the-line defensive unit. As good as Minnesota’s defense is, it’s not Chicago’s.

With ten days to prepare for the game, the Packers should have enough time to tune up the offense. QB Aaron Rodgers had an average performance against the Bears. I will be stunned if this goes on for a second straight week.

There has been a lot of bets siding with the Vikings early. I fully expect this line to drop at -2.5 at some point in the week. Here’s where you jump on the Packers without hesitation.

New Orleans Saints (1-0) at Los Angeles Rams (1-0)

We all know the story here. The Saints think they would have been in the Super Bowl if the officials haven’t messed up the pass interference call during last year’s NFC championship game.

Yet, New Orleans fails to remember their offense missed two red zones chances early in the game that would have meant 14 points instead of just six.

QB Drew Brees

But also, that QB Drew Brees turned the ball over during overtime that led to the Rams having a short field to win the game. Either way, that’s ancient history. Both teams are different from last season, and that’s what matters.

The betting line for this game opened with the Rams as 3-point favorites. now has LA as a 2.5-point favorite. 53% of the betting public is siding with the Saints in this one.

Los Angeles Preparation

Los Angeles had an extra day to prepare for this game, and it’s at home. The Rams 30-27 win over the Panthers in Carolina reminded us of the excellent quality of the team’s offense.

The narrative was mostly lost after scoring only three points in the Super Bowl defeat against the New England Patriots. But the Rams ran for 166 yards against the Panthers in a team effort between Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown.

The return of WR Cooper Kupp also gives the Rams passing game another dimension. The Saints didn’t deal with Kupp in the NFC championship game.

Two things worry me about betting New Orleans. The Saints will be playing on a short week, and their defense allowed 414 yards in the Monday win against Houston. That half a point is too valuable to waste it.
