The start of the 2019-20 NBA season has been both thrilling and surprising.
The Lakers are on top of the Western Conference, Ja Morant is leading the Rookie of the Year conversation, yet no one is hotter than the Serbian magician, Luka Doncic.
The amazing thing about the Serbian is he’s only 20-years old, but he conducts himself as a 10-year veteran in the league.
Can Doncic keep this pace for the rest of the season and make a jump to the top-3 favorites to win the MVP?

Things have changed just two months into the season. Steph Curry is out for the year, and James Harden has taken the pole position for MVP. The Rockets’ superstar is now +175, leading Giannis, who currently is +200.
LeBron James’ odds have the King at +600, which presents a lot of value. Yet, James can be a victim of the load management in the next few months of the season, and that can hurt his chances.
The same thing happened to Kawhi Leonard. Two weeks into the season and the Clippers coach Doc Rivers was already giving him a lot of rest.
Luka Doncic Odds From +4000 to +700
But the most intriguing name out there is Luka Doncic, who is now listed at +700 to win the MVP award. When the season started, he was sitting at 40/1 with minimal chances to get into the conversation.
How great is his current run with the Mavs? Doncic has reached 300 pts, 100 rebounds & 100 assists over his last ten games. Only four players in the history of the NBA have averaged a 30-points triple-double throughout ten games.

The site FiveThirtyEight did a piece about the improbable run of Luka at the start of the 2019 season.
There have been six names in NBA history that have averaged 25.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game in a season: In that list are Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Larry Bird, James Harden, and Oscar Robertson.
None of them did this at age 20.
For Doncic is remains a small sample size, but it’s worst noticing how outer-worldly his play has been. If he keeps playing this way, his odds are going to get slimmer and slimmer.
At +700, the bet on Luka winning the MVP offers a healthy payout, for a player that has no signs of slowing down. There is plenty of value right now.

The James Harden Narrative
The only name that can prevent Luka Doncic from taking the MVP award home is James Harden. The 2018 MVP winner is coming for another award trying to average 40-points per game.
The number by itself is crazy, and the fact that he’s close averaging 38.4 points per game is mindboggling.
The narrative that can hurt Harden chances is that he takes too many shots per game to get to those numbers. Harden is shooting 38.4% from the field after 15 games.
He recently had a game Minnesota where he scored 49 points, but he finished the night 16/41 from the field.
To get a real consideration for the MVP, you need to do something special, but you also must do it for an entire season.
It’s early for Luka, but in a month or two we may be wishing we took the +700 while it was still available.
