Teams You Can Pass On From The Start
California, Utah, Washington, and Washington State can all go. While none of them are exactly terrible, they just don’t have the horses to win this thing.
The Washington Huskies have a couple of NBA players in their frontcourt in Jade McDaniels and Isaiah Stewart. Still, they completely fell off the map when point guard Quade Green was deemed academically ineligible following the first semester.
Washington State was a surprising team until about halfway through January when it fell apart. The Cougars were 12-7 overall and 3-3 in the league before ending the season at 15-16 and 6-12 in the league.
Utah has some talent in Timmy Allen and Both Gach, but the Utes are probably a year away from being a genuine threat in the postseason tournament as their top six scorers are all freshmen and sophomores.
Favorites To Win The Pac-12 Tournament
You have to like these numbers we see from MyBookie.
Oregon is the obvious favorite, but USC, Arizona State, and UCLA are the other three teams that are receiving first-round byes, and all of them are much more reasonable options than Stanford and Arizona.
Arizona State sticks out to me in particular, given how the bracket is constructed.
The Sun Devils will face either Colorado or Washington State, and as stated above, Washington State is not very good, and Colorado has been straight-up awful over the last two weeks, losing four games in a row to close the regular season.
If Arizona State moves on from that game, it will face either UCLA, Stanford or California. Arizona State has beaten all of those teams at least once this season already.
The Bruins have been the hottest team in the league since the start of February, going 8-1 to vault them into the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament.
Junior guard Chris Smith has stepped up and given first-year Bruins coach Mick Cronin a dependable scorer, and both Jalen Hill and Cody Riley have developed into dependable forwards.
USC has the talent to win this tournament, but I am not sure if it is as good as its record suggests.
The Trojans do have a tremendous frontcourt with Onyeka Okongwu and Nick Racocevic, who combine for roughly 27 points and 17 rebounds per game.
The Rest Of The Teams Competing On The Pac-12 Tournament
Arizona and Colorado were both thought to be the best team in the league at points during the season, but the Wildcats are young and struggle in close games, winning just three of 10 contests this season decided by five points or less.
Colorado is playing its worst basketball of the season right now and will limp into the NCAA Tournament. The Buffaloes simply cannot be trusted right now.
The same could be said for Stanford, which is just 5-9 since Jan. 18.
Oregon State has a couple of premier scoring options in Tres Tinkle and Ethan Thompson, but the Beavers’ team defense is a major concern.
Our Pick To Win The 2020 Pac-12 Tournament
Oregon gives you an excellent option as it is the favorite to win the event, but the margin between the Ducks and UCLA or Arizona State is minimal, in my opinion.
Given the way the bracket lays out, I am very likely to put my money on Arizona State Sun Devils (+1000) with a sprinkle on the UCLA Bruins (+1300).
