Road to the Triple Crown – The Belmont Stakes and Justify

Belmont Stakes Justify Blog Header Cover

Justify, became the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby without racing as a two-year-old since 1882. After winning the Preakness this Saturday, he also has another chance to make history as a Triple Crown winner, if he should take the top spot in June’s Belmont Stakes.

Justified Going for The Triple

Justify was -260 or more at most sportsbooks and managed to take the Preakness by a close margin. However, not nearly by the margin in which he dominated the Kentucky Derby. Justify went head-to-head with Good Magic for much of the race and held off a surging Bravazo to take down the Preakness. With the Preakness Victory, the horse has won nearly $2.1 million for its several ownership groups.

About the Belmont Stakes

The Belmont Stakes will be held on June 9, 2018, at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. Like the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, the race is open to three-year-old thoroughbreds.

The race is 1.5 miles long and will be a tougher test for Justify as the horse looks to go for the Triple Crown. Many horses sit out the Preakness, in hopes of winning the Belmont Stakes. So, Justify will face a much fresher field of horses. Last year’s prize pool was a total of $1.5 million with an $800,000 payout to the first place finisher.
