The NHL will be the first American sports league to come back from the COVID-19 forced hiatus.
The rest of the leagues will watch closely. We, the gamblers, will gladly put money on anything NHL-related, even if we haven’t done it since the start of the season.
You can find futures, series, and Stanley Cup odds at both MyBookie and BetOnline. However, few understand how the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs will work. Let’s see if we can break it down a little.
How will the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs Be Played?
The NHL announced the 2020 playoffs will have 24 teams instead of the normal 16. It makes sense considering the regular season abruptly ended due to the Coronavirus outbreak. This format gives teams that still had a fighting chance an opportunity to compete for a spot in the next round.
The first round of the postseason will have eight teams per conference trying to advance to the next. The seeding for the postseason was based on the current regular season positions. It will go like this:
- 5th vs 12th
- 6th vs 11th
- 7th vs 10th
- 8th vs 9th
What Happens With The First Four Seeds On Each Conference?
The first four seeds will play a round-robin with the only goal to establish a proper seeding for the second round.
These teams will face the winners of the lower seeds’ series. The round-robin guarantees the top seeds getting back on the ice and in hockey form while they “wait” for their opponents.
The eight teams in the Round Robin will be the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference. The St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, and Dallas Stars in the West.
What are the NHL first-round series odds?
BetOnline has listed the price for the eight first-round series. One thing to keep in mind is the NHL hasn’t mentioned if these will be a five-game or a seven-game series.
We know the playoffs will be in two hub cities, with each city taking all the games for a conference. Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Edmonton, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis–Saint Paul, Pittsburgh, Toronto, and Vancouver are the options.
