At stake is not only bragging rights and a huge prize purse but the opportunity to pick up valuable WCS points for Global Finals qualification.
Top Matches To Bet On At StarCraft 2 GSL Vs. The World 2019
The four-day tournament, set to begin on August 15, features 16 players: eight from South Korea’s Global StarCraft II League (GSL) and eight more from the global WCS Circuit.
Six of the 16 competitors appear at the tournament courtesy of regional invitations while the rest of the field was selected via fan voting.
Let’s take a closer look at the matches with the best betting odds for StarCraft 2 GSL Vs. the World 2019.
First Round of Elimination
The first round of the single-elimination event takes place on Thursday and Friday, August 15 and 16, and offers up a handful of juicy match-ups. Below is a preview of Thursday’s four matches.
Maru (-146) vs. Stats (+120)
The third match on Thursday features tournament favorite Maru and fellow Korean Stats.
Maru is currently the odds-on best player in the world having won the last four Global StaCraft II League Code S seasons, but he’ll be tested early by Stats, who is fresh off a victory at Assembly Summer 2019 earlier this month.
The Protoss took second place at both IEM Katowice in March and the 2018 Global Finals in November.
Expect him to again be second best in this juicy first-round match-up to the world’s hottest player.
Dark (-1111) vs. Elazer (+670)
Dark arrives at GSL Vs. The World as a real contender and draws the easiest first round possible.
Elazer, a Polish Zerg, has not placed at a premier event since IEM PyeongChang in February of 2018 and is one of four World All-Stars vote winners.
Elazer’s CV features a 2017 WCS Valencia title and a degree of bragging rights in this particular match-up having defeated Dark, 2-1, in the Global Playoffs of the 2017 Global Finals.
But since then, these two have set off on vastly different paths. Expect Dark to sweep this one-handedly.
Neeb (-114) vs. ShoWTimE (-106)
The tightest of the first-round fixtures features American Protoss Neeb and German Protoss ShoWTimE.
The two are ranked third and seventh, respectively, in the WCS Circuit Rankings and, to be fair, it’s anyone’s guess who will come out on top.
Protoss vs. Protoss match-ups are always hard to predict but they’re even more difficult to gauge when the competitors are as talented as Neeb and ShoWTimE.
Based on form alone, Neeb has the edge having most recently placed 3-4th at 2019 WCS Spring and first at 2019 WCS Winter Americas. Really though, this is a toss-up, so take your pick!
soO (-270) vs. TIME (+215)
A Korea vs. China match-up features one of the game’s greatest-ever players, soO, and one of the most hyped up-and-comers in TIME.
In theory, soO is talented enough and experienced enough to win the tournament outright, but his road to the Grand Finals would predictably run through Dark.
The Zerg was victorious at IEM Katowice and defeated TIME in their previous five series. TIME enters GSL Vs. The World as a trendy underdog pick to knock off soO, but backing the South Korean as the favorite is a safe move.
Being only 19, TIME, a Terran, will inevitably shake up the SC2 pro scene, but soO and the old guard will have the last word in 2019.
