Although Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson officially announced their $9 million-dollar match back in August – the hype for the upcoming duel between two of the game’s greats has not dissipated. “The Match” as it has been dubbed will take place over Thanksgiving Weekend in Las Vegas.
The Match – Date & TV Time
The two will face off at Shadow Creek golf course and with play beginning on Friday, Nov. 23 at 8 AM EST. Watching the matchup between the two legends won’t be free. HBO will be broadcasting the fight, but it will be a PPV event. So far, no price has been announced. However, one can expect it to be around the amount of a top boxing PPV which can range from $50 to $100.
Woods Vs. Mickelson – Betting Odds
Tiger Woods is undoubtedly still in contention for the TOUR Championship. He’s just behind names like Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, and Rory McIlroy. At +1200, he’s right with Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas. Mickelson is far from contending for a PGA Championship, as he’s not even listed on betting sites like SportsBetting.ag Sportsbook in the top 30 contenders.
Tiger Vs. Phil – Number of Strokes
Tiger has an early advantage on the number of strokes with Phil at +1.5 (-135) and Tiger Woods at -1.5 (+105) strokes. As we get closer to the event, more and more propositions will appear for this significant golf event.
The Format
It will be traditional match play, but there will be several “in play” competitions, such as the closest to the pin and the longest drive. Both Phil and Tiger will be wearing microphones throughout the match and so will their caddies.
Who Is The Better Bet?
I would like to make an argument for Mickelson in this match, but it’s genuinely challenging. Tiger Woods held the course record at Shadow Creek with Fred Couples at 60, before it was renovated in 2008. Since then, Dustin Johnson’s 65 holds the club record.
Woods has been far better than Mickelson for the past few months and is the golfer with better current form, without a doubt. It’s not a surprise that Tiger’s odds to win have increased as we move closer to the event. It would not shock me to see Woods at near -200 by the time these two greats tee off. Tiger is an excellent bet right now at -170, and it may be worth locking in that price before the odds increase in favor of Woods. I think he wins this competition without too much trouble.
