For fans of golf, high-stakes matchups between greats and those who gamble on golf – there is also some good news surrounding future events. According to Golf Digest, Mickelson and Woods plan to create more matchups like their November heads-up battle that will feature the game’s top-ranked players. The plan is for them to possibly occur twice a year, once around the Fourth of July and another around Thanksgiving.
Tiger vs. Phil Betting Odds
We initially reported on the odds between Woods and Mickelson back in September. The odds opened with Woods at -155 and Mickelson at +125 earlier in the year. Woods was a -170-favorite back in September, and he has increased his advantage once again at most betting sites. At SportsBetting.ag, the current prices for the outright winner is Woods at -200 and Mickelson at +170. Though, it may be worth shopping around as there are some sites with Mickelson at +175 or better.
Which Golfer Will Win?
The odds have clearly moved in favor of Tiger Woods since they opened. It’s hard to argue against Woods in this spot with the way he has played lately compared to Phil, but then again – you’re also laying -200. It depends which Tiger shows up. But as I look more at this matchup – I am leaning more towards taking Mickelson. This is a course they’re both familiar with, and Phil isn’t going to lay down and let Tiger take this one. Remember, we’re not simply betting on which Golfer will win, but the probability of in relation to the odds. At +175, which is available at some sportsbooks, Mickelson only needs to win 36 percent of the time for us to break even.
This match is a long time coming for both golfers. I do feel that it will be closer than many expect. The betting market here may also have a bit of public influence, as the masses simply love betting on Tiger Woods in just about every event. This is getting more ink than major tournaments, and the world will be watching. I think the value lies with Phil and it’s certainly possible the price gets better as we get closer to 3 PM on Nov. 23.
