Tigers Beat Astros As the Biggest MLB Underdog In 15 Years

Tigers Beat Astros As the Biggest MLB Underdog In 15 Years

Last night, the Detroit Tigers pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the MLB season and one of the biggest in sports betting history. Detroit was around +440 to win their game at Houston, but they managed to secure a 2-1 victory.

It was the largest upset in the majors over the past 15 years. The Astros closed at -560 at many sportsbooks, making them the largest favorite going back over the same time frame.

One bettor came to the window at Mirage/MGM in Las Vegas with a wad of cash and wagered $55,000 to win $10,000 at -550 odds on the Astros. Another bet was accepted to the tune of $62,520 on Houston at -575 to win $11,000. It’s safe to say that these two gamblers didn’t have the best day betting baseball.

Verlander Pitches Gem, Still Loses

The pitching matchup saw future Hall-of-Famer, Justin Verlander, face off against Tigers’ starter, Daniel Norris. This was quite the pitching mismatch, as you could likely guess, from the above odds.

Verlander also pitched about as well as he could. The Houston ace only gave up two hits in 9 innings and recorded 11 strikeouts.

The problem is, his two hits were solo home runs, including one in the ninth inning to give the Tigers the lead. His offense didn’t help him either, registering just one run on six hits.

Another Major Upset This Season

Less than two weeks ago, the Astros were apart of another significant upset. This time, they were -460 on the road against the Baltimore Orioles, a team, like the Tigers, at the bottom of their division and AL standings.

The Orioles were around +390 in that game. The contest was much higher scoring than Detroit’s loss to Houston.

Baltimore led For much Of The Game

Despite their dominance during the game, they surrendered several runs in the top of 9th, before winning the game with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th, by a score of 8-7.

Until last night’s win by the Detroit, the Orioles upset of the Astros ten days ago was easily the biggest upset of the 2019 MLB Season.

We must go back to 2007 to see a more considerable defeat in the majors. In that season, the Washington Nationals beat the Minnesota Twins as +395 underdogs.
