MMA Betting Types
The most common MMA betting type is the moneyline bet or outrights on which fighter will win the match. However, there are a ton of other betting options when it comes to wagering on mixed martial arts.
The sport lends itself to wagering perfectly, with moneyline odds to decide the outright winners, but a whole host of propositions and other markets.
Even if you’re not a fan of MMA, it’s a worthy sport to learn from a betting perspective, as it’s one that the oddsmakers are a lot less sharp than other sports.

MMA Moneyline Bet
A moneyline bet or outright is the most popular betting market when it comes to wagering on MMA and the easiest to understand.
It merely involves picking the winner of the fight. If you’re wagering at betting sites that cater mostly to Americans, these odds will almost always be expressed in moneyline or American odds.
- Connor McGregor +140
- Khabib Nurmagomedov -170
Khabib is the favorite in this fight. If you wanted to win $100 by betting on him at -170, you would have to bet $170 to win $100. A Khabib victory would give you a winning ticket and a $100 payout.
If he loses the fight, then the bet would be graded as a loss. If you were to bet on the underdog, the odds would be +140.
Once again, McGregor needs to win the fight for your bet to be graded as a winner. A $100 bet on McGregor would pay $140. If he won the fight and you bet $100, you would earn $140, but the return would be $240, including your $100 initial stake.
MMA Parlay Bet
Parlays are among the most popular wagers when it comes to betting sports. It shouldn’t surprise you that they’re also one of the favorite bet types for those betting on MMA.
We dive deeper into parlay betting at SBS, but the basics of a parlay are that it must include multiple bets or selections and that all of those must win for the parlay to be graded as a winner.
- Khabib -170 vs. McGregor
- Derrick Lewis +520 vs. Daniel Cormier
Here we are parlaying Khabib -170 and Derrick Lewis. Both fighters must win their matches for our bet to win. If either one loses, the wager is graded as a loss.
If one fighter were to draw, then the wager be reverted into a straight bet. Parlays are an excellent way to get a significant favorite at a more affordable price than betting them straight up. However, in some cases, sportsbooks won’t let you parlay MMA matches.
This is usually not the case, but some betting sites have different rules than others. Even with that said, you should stick 2-3 parlays, as a general strategy.
MMA Totals (Over/Under) Bet
Since MMA is not two-teams scoring points, you won’t see traditional totals related to points scored. However, most MMA totals will be centered around the length of the match.
UFC regulations have title fights of 5 rounds of 5 minutes with regular fights or non-title bouts coming in at three rounds of 5 minutes.
For non-UFC bouts, the length of time for each round and the number of rounds can vary. When you’re betting an MMA total or over/under – you’re wagering on how long the fight will go. For example:
Totals Number of Rounds – Connor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov
- Over 3.5 Rounds (-110)
- Under 3.5 Rounds (-110)
If we bet over 3.5 rounds and the fight ends in Round 4, then our bet is a winner. If it ends sooner than that, then the bet is graded as a loss.
If we bet under 3.5 rounds and the fight ends in Round 2, then we win our bet. Most MMA fights have an over/under or total between 2.5 and 3.5 rounds.
MMA Round Betting
Like wagering on boxing, each round of an MMA fight is scored. A round can be scored to either fighter or end in a draw. Most sportsbooks will give bettors the option to bet on each round.
You should be able to wager on which fighter will win each round up to 3 or 5 rounds, depending on the length of the fight. Rounds can also end in a draw.
If that is not an option at your sportsbook, then the bet would be graded as a push if you bet on either fighter and the outcome was a draw.
- Khabib Nurmagomedov to win Round 1 (-150)
- Connor McGregor to win Round 1 (+130)
Again, using moneyline odds, we can bet on either fighter to win the first round. Khabib is the favorite at -150 and McGregor is the underdog to win the first round at +130.
Round betting is a derivative of the overall fight odds with some adjustments being made for fighter performance early in the fight or later rounds.
Method Of Victory Bet
&Method of victory is a market to attack if you’re a diehard MMA fan and bettor.
It’s also one of the most fun. Outright or moneyline odds allow you to pick which fighter wins, but the method of victory market will enable you to select how they win the fight. Either by knockout, submission or by points. Let’s look at an example.
- Khabib Nurmagomedov to win by KO (+120)
- Khabib Nurmagomedov to win by Submission (+150)
- Khabib Nurmagomedov to win by Points (-110)
This market is self-explanatory. You have the option of picking either fighter and choosing how they win the fight, either by knockout, submission or points.
For the bet to win, your fighter must win the match, and by the method of victory, you chose in your wager. Otherwise, the bet will be graded as a loss.
MMA Live Betting
The above markets and more are available when live betting. Each sportsbook will offer different options when it comes to betting MMA live.
It’s best to check before depositing into a betting site if you’re interested in betting MMA as they happen. Live betting odds are updated in real-time in relation to how the fight plays out.
If you’re into MMA, betting it live is a must.
Betting MMA Props
There are several other types of bets that may not be offered at all betting sites.
The props provided by sportsbooks on MMA are more up to the imagination of the oddsmakers at the particular sportsbook.
You may see the options below and more when betting on MMA markets at offshore betting sites.
Double chance bets are like the method of victory bets, except that you are wagering on two outcomes for your fighter to win, instead of just one.
The payouts won’t be as high with double-chance bets in most cases compared to the method of victory bets because you’re getting more “outs” to win your bet with two chances. Here’s another example.
- Khabib Nurmagomedov to win by KO or submission (-110)
- Khabib Nurmagomedov to win by submission or points (-130)
To win this bet type, you will need to not only pick the correct winner of the fight but also get the method of victory right.
This bet is a bit easier to win than the method of victory bet, as you have two ways of winning the wager.
If your fighter does not win or he wins with a different method of victory than the ones you have chosen, then the bet is graded as a loss.
UFC Fight Award Bets
At every UFC PPV event, there are three awards or honors given out. They are Fight of the Night, KO of the Night and Submission of the Night.
Most sportsbooks that have UFC betting options will also have these props available. These are outrights, so for your bet to win, you must pick the correct fight, knockout or submission of the night for it to be graded as a winner.
