Mike Nugent Replaces Gostkowski As New England Patriots Kicker
Patriots Find Gostkowski’s Replacement Among Seven Candidates
Stephen Gostkowski has been the New England Patriots kicker since 2006 but is now out for the season after suffering a hip injury. Gostkowski was placed on injured reserve last Wednesday. This may have thrown many fans fantasy football lineups out of wack; like when Andrew Luck retired, so close to the start of the season.
Gostkowski will undergo surgery later this year. Sources say he will be healthy and back on the field for the 2020 NFL season.
For the first time in nine years, the Patriots will have a new placekicker on Sunday.
Top Candidate Chosen Among Seven
After 24 hours of tryouts and seven candidates later, the Patriots signed veteran kicker Mike Nugent:
Who Came To The Tryouts?
Along with Nugent, another six great players participated in the tryouts:
- Kai Forbath
- Elliott Fry
- Blair Walsh
- Matthew Wright
- Younghoe Koo
- Josh Gable
Let’s Talk About Mike Nugent
Nugent has played in the NFL since 2005, making him the veteran within the bunch. This is a surprising turn of events, as he’s only kicked in three games since the end of the 2017 season.
In 2018, he was placed on the Raiders’ injury reserve just three weeks into the season. He also suffered a hip injury, similar to Gostkowski’s.
Although Nugent has never won a playoff game, his performance has been consistent with the Raiders:
- Scoring 100 percent of his field goals (6 out of 6)
- 80 percent of his extra-point attempts (7 out of 8)
When he was with the Bengals and Jets, he managed to get 5 out 5 extra points.
Was This A Good Decision By The Patriots?
The New England Patriots have a replacement ready in case Nugent struggles. They added Koo to the practice squad.
The Patriots base their hopes on Nugent due to his 14-year NFL career experience. Along with the five playoff appearances and his desire to finally win a playoff game. This will be Nugent’s eighth team since being selected in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Jets.
We will see how the Patriots new kicker will perform this Sunday when they face the Washington Redskins.
