West Virginia To Lose A Lot Of Money During March Madness

West Virginia losing money during March Madness

When the states made different efforts to allow sports betting, they were thinking about the big bucks the sporting events would leave for them daily. But everybody knew the big paydays would be the Super Bowl and March Madness. Well, West Virginia will miss out most of the College Hoops dance due to an issue with its platform provider, which is in Cyprus.

2018 NCAA March Madness Expert Picks – Round of 64 (Day 2)The West Virginia Casinos have put the retail and online sports betting operations in pause due to these issues with the platform. There is a dispute with the third party technology supplier. That has resulted in both the Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras casinos to stop activities in the last few days, and until things get back to order. Those two casinos are physical sportsbooks but BetLucky.com, who is their online home, has also suspended the betting business.

BetLucky.com is the only legal way to bet online in West Virginia, or at least it was until the last few days. “Unfortunately, we have decided to temporarily suspend sports betting at our Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras casinos and via the BetLucky.com app. We are honoring all resulted bets and are working to resolve this situation. We apologize for any inconvenience,” says the company statement.

Those who want to bet at a local betting shop in West Virginia would have to take their money to the FanDuel Sportsbook at the Greenbrier, Hollywood Casino, and The Mountaineer Casino. Those three retail sportsbooks have continued to operate. But they don’t offer online betting. In the next few months DraftKings, FanDuel, and William Hill are expected to enter the market in West Virginia.

West Virginia Won’t Bet Online During March Madness

Timing is everything in life, and this is a bad one for West Virginia. While bettors wait for the contract dispute between Mardi Gras, Wheeling Island, and the platform provider Miomni to get resolved, the biggest tournament in basketball is underway. The issue might be solved at any moment, but there is no way of knowing. The March Madness early rounds will be played from Thursday to Sunday.

It’s highly unlikely there is agreement that frees up online betting by that time.  The global hospitality company Delaware North operates a portfolio of regional casinos. Miomni is a company located in the United Kingdom. Apparently part of their business is in Cyprus, according to State Lottery Director John Myers. Between all of them, there is an issue that hasn’t been able to settle. Being overseas has made this a more significant problem.

The West Virginia Lottery Commission released the numbers for February and the sports betting online app received more than $210,000 in bets at Mardi Graw last month and $145,000 at Wheeling Island. Those numbers would have been almost doubled with March Madness betting hitting the calendar. The total taxable revenue for sports gambling in West Virginia during February was $700,028.92, according to the numbers provided by the Lottery Commission. The state receives 10%.
