The Twins were a surprise team to make the postseason after struggling for much of the year but surged late to grab the last AL Wild Card spot. They finished the season with an 85-77 for second place in the central, but firmly behind the 102-win, Cleveland Indians.
Santana has been fantastic for Minnesota this season, hence him getting the starting nod in this win or go home Wild Card game. He has a 2.55 ERA over his last three starts and holds a 3.28 mark with 167 Ks over the regular season.
New York Yankees – Luis Severino
It’s been a breakout season for Severino, who at the season’s start, was no lock to stay in the rotation. Not only has he cemented a spot in the rotation for years to come, but he’s easily been the Yankees’ best pitcher and a true ace.
Tonight will be his first postseason appearance. He’s been downright dominant since the All-Star Break, going 9-2 with a 2.28 ERA. On the year, he has a 2.98 ERA with a whopping 230 strikeouts.
The Yankees have seen the most betting action, which has pushed the odds from a -230 opener to -260 at Bovada. The Twins currently are +220 to win outright. The total has not moved from the 7.5 opening number, but it is juiced on the under 7.5 (-120).
If you got the Yankees early, then you’re looking pretty good, especially considering the substantial line move from -230 to -260. However, I would hesitate to jump on that price now. I think the Yankees are the sharp side in this one, but there may not be a ton of value left at this price.
Severino has been as dominant as they come, though. It wouldn’t shock me if he went 7 or 8 innings against Minnesota with double-digit strikeouts. The run line at Bovada is a lot more affordable if you think New York dominates. It’s -1.5 runs at -125.
