Green Wave Hits Reset After Tough Finish

Things were rolling right along early in the season for Tulane. The Green Wave were 5-1 and 2-0 in conference play. Their only loss was to an outstanding Auburn team. Then, the schedule got tough.

They traveled to Memphis and Navy, both top 25 teams, and lost both. They defeated Tulsa before losing three straight to Temple, UCF, and SMU. All good teams, but losing five out of six at the end of the season wasn’t how Tulane wanted to end the year. They will get a chance to turn it around against the Golden Eagles.

Great Offense, Weaker Defense

Justin McMillan has thrown for 2,229 yards on 170 of 296 passing, with 14 touchdowns and ten interceptions. His top target is Darnell Mooney, who has 45 receptions for 670 yards and five touchdowns. McMillan is also the team’s leading rusher with 704 yards on 152 carries and 12 touchdowns.

The Green Wave’s defense is weak against the run, allowing 164.5 yards per game and 378.5 total yards per game. They allow their opponents an average of 27.4 points per game.

Golden Eagles Look To Find Their Offense

Southern Miss’ offense was prolific throughout the season. It went dormant in the team’s two losses to end the season against Western Kentucky and Florida Atlantic. Although, they managed to put up 10 and 17 points, respectively. The Golden Eagles average 411 yards of total offense and 27.8 points per game.

The team is led by a strong trio of juniors in Jack Abraham, Kevin Perkins, and Quez Watkins.

Strong Offense, Strong Defense

Abraham has thrown for 3,329 yards on 258 of 382 passing, with 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Perkins is the Golden Eagles’ leading rusher with 548 yards on 102 carries with three touchdowns, while Watkins has caught 55 balls for 1,024 yards and five touchdowns.

Southern Miss’ defense has been extremely tough against the run, allowing only 111.8 yards per game and 350.8 total yards. The Golden Eagles hold their opponents to 25.9 points per game.

Tulane Vs. Southern Miss Armed Forces Bowl Prediction

Both these offenses can put points on the board in a hurry. The advantage almost always goes to the offense after these long layoffs before a bowl game. This one should be no different, and with both offenses averaging over 400 yards a game, the chances for a high-scoring affair seem likely.

Tulane’s McMillan is the best player in the game, and he will ultimately be the difference-maker. We aren’t sure if the Green Wave can cover, as the seven points seem just about right. The play here is the over after it moved to 56.5, and we’ll go with Tulane to get just over the point spread in a win. Take Tulane Green Wave -7.
