Oakland Athletics vs. New York Yankees Prediction
The A’s and Yankees split their season series at 3-3. Still, that has not stopped the oddsmakers from installing the Yankees as the clear favorite. New York has gotten most of the betting action, and they’re currently at -168 to win with the Athletics at +158. The total is 8.5 runs which has not changed since opening. It is heavily juiced on the under at most sportsbooks.
Hendriks Against Severino – Pitchers Face Off
The A’s will opt for their bullpen as they try to secure an ALDS berth against the mighty Yankees. We can expect to see several different pitchers in this one for Oakland. Liam Hendriks will start things off. He’s pitched just 24 innings in total in the regular season with a 4.11 ERA. The right-hander threw a perfect first inning against the Yankees on Sept 4th.
Luis Severino is one of the game’s top pitchers. The 22-year-old right-hander has once again had a fantastic season in pinstripes. He matched his 2016 breakout with a 3.39 and 220 strikeout performance in 2018. Severino will be out to avenge his defeat from last season’s postseason when he was beaten up by the Twins and left in the first inning after giving up two homers and three runs.
DailyBaseballData.com allows us to see the batter vs. pitcher history between these teams and pitchers. It appears that several Yankees, most notably, Andrew McCutchen have had some success against Hendriks. The A’s haven’t hit Severino well, but that shouldn’t be a shock, as most teams have not. Switch-hitting Jed Lowrie has been the most successful notching six hits in 11 career at-bats, but all singles.
Our Prediction – Oakland +158
I love backing dogs in games like this, as anything can happen in a single game. However, the A’s are indeed a viable bet regardless. Their bullpen approach will help them to play matchups against the Yankees successfully, and, hopefully, use their best relievers in the highest leverage situations. The issue with Oakland is that they don’t have too many left-handed power bats, which would help against a tough right-hander pitcher in Severino. Still, they’re an offense that can score runs and they certainly have a bullpen advantage in this game. At around +160, I would take a shot on Oakland.
