Canelo Alvarez – Boxing’s Best
Alvarez is already one of boxing’s most talented and exciting fighters, but he wants to make history this Saturday night. The move to fight Kovalev does just that. His last fight was in May of this year against Daniel Jacobs.
Alvarez defended his three titles while acquiring Jacobs’ IBF Middleweight title. He won by unanimous decision in a fight that he wasn’t tested much.
Overall, the fight brought his record 52-2-1. The only loss came against the now retired, Floyd Mayweather Jr. His last knockout came against Rocky Fielding in December of last year.
Canelo’s Disadvantage
Canelo has a notable height disadvantage in this fight. However, he’s only an inch behind Sergey when it comes to reach.
He should have no problem connecting, regardless of how Kovalev decides to fight. Alvarez is also considerably younger than the Russian, who is 36 years old compared to Canelo’s 29.
Sergey Kovalev – The Krusher
Kovalev comes into this fight after getting a knockout in a fight in August against Anthony Yarde. He knocked out Yarde in the 11th round.
Before that, he fought Eleider Alvarez in a rematch, which he won by decision. Eleider previously defeated him in July 2018. Overall, the “Krusher” has a 34-3-1 record. He has 29 wins by knockout in a total of 38 total fights.
He has a considerable advantage over Canelo when it comes to height and weight. However, as mentioned above, he doesn’t have much of a reach advantage of Alvarez.
Age will be a significant factor. Most regard Alvarez firmly in his prime at 29, while Kovalev is in the latter stages of his career at age 36.
Alvarez vs. Kovalev – Who Will Win?
We have seen the odds go in Alvarez’s favor since opening. He began as a -360 favorite at Pinnacle Sports but is now -400 or more at just about every sportsbook online. We believe this move is correct and still see value in him even at the increased price of -460.
Sure, we don’t know what Canelo’s power is like above his weight class, but if you’ve watched him fight – I doubt that you are too worried.
It’s possible Kovalev has his moments in this one or keeps things close early, but Canelo is too fast for him. After the sixth round, he will be tired. Canelo will still be fresh (or fresh enough).
He should be able to weather his early flurry and drop him to the canvas later in the fight. I like him to win by decision, but as we get closer to the weekend, props we become available. Check back here for a few more proposition wagers we like for the big fight.
