Washington Capitals Vs. Vegas Golden Knights Predictions
Golden Knights finished the regular season with a 51-24-7 record, which was good enough to win them the Pacific Division. Vegas then went on to beat the Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks and the Winnipeg Jets to advance to the Stanley Cup. Vegas looked good after the first game but lost three straight games to put them in the 3-1 series deficit. Vegas will now look to pull off the comeback to win the Stanley Cup in their 1st ever season.
Washington won the Metropolitan Division with a 49-26-7 record. The Capitals finally overcame their playoff struggles when the beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games in the second round. Washington beat the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round and the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals. Washington already won one game on the road, now they look to do it a second time. Game 1 was a high scoring back and fourth affair. Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie each had two points, but it was not enough. Tomas Nosek scored two goals as the Golden Knights pulled off a 6-4 victory. Braden Holtby had 28 saves. Marc-Andre Fleury had 24.
Game 2 stayed in Vegas, but this time it was the Capitals pulling off the win. Alex Ovechkin scored his first career Stanley Cup Final goal and Lars Eller had three points in the Capitals upset. The Golden Knights had a prime opportunity to tie the game in the last three minutes, but Holtby’s stick made an outrageous save to clinch the 3-2 win. Washington got to host their first Stanley Cup Final game since 1998 in Game 3 and the Capitals did not disappoint their home fans. Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring. Evgeny Kuznetsov had a goal and an assist as the Capitals earned a 3-1 win. Holtby made 21 of 22 saves.
Washington Capitals (+129) Vs Vegas Golden Knights (-143)
Game 4 was the most lopsided matchup in the series. Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nicklas Backstrom combined for seven assists as the Capitals coasted to a 6-2 victory. Fleury allowed six goals on 17 shots, while Holtby turned away 28 of 30. The Golden Knights were blown out on the scoreboard but did not lack scoring opportunities throughout the game. Marc-Andre Fleury is a large reason that the Golden Knights have made it this far. Fleury has struggled tremendously in the Stanley Cup Finals though. Through the four games, he has a save percentage of .845 and a GAA of 4.00. In the entire playoff run, Fleury has a .929 save percentage and a 2.15 GAA.
Braden Holtby has been great for Washington since earning his starting job back in Game 3 of the first round. Holtby has posted a .923 save percentage and a GAA of 2.13. After struggling in Game 1, Holtby has stepped up his game in the Finals as well. He has a save percentage of .919 and a 2.50 GAA in the Stanley Cup Finals. The odds have the Golden Knights listed to win Game 5 at home about 59 percent of the time. I agree with that number. Vegas lost their last game at home and I do not see them losing four straight games in the Finals. Vegas knows how much of a must win game this is, and every skater is playing with their backs pinned against the wall. That means they have nothing to lose. I expect Vegas to give one strong push at home to force a Game 6.
