Washington Capitals Vs. Vegas Golden Knights Predictions
The Golden Knights have taken the league by storm after becoming the best first-year team of all time. Vegas finished the regular season at the top of the Pacific Division standings with a 51-24-7 record. The Golden Knights faced off against the Los Angeles Kings in the first round and took care of business in a four-game sweep. The San Jose Sharks were the Golden Knights next test and Vegas pulled out a series win in six games. The Winnipeg Jets and Golden Knights met in the Western Conference Finals.
The Jets were expected by many to beat Vegas and move on, but once again the Golden Knights defied all odds and knocked out Winnipeg in only five games. Washington took a step back in the regular season as they did not win their third straight President’s Trophy. The Capitals went 49-26-7 in the regular season, which was good enough to earn them the top spot in the Metropolitan Division.
The Capitals met the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round of this seasons playoffs. Washington faced a scare in the first round as they fell down 0-2 at home in the series but won three straight road games to win the series 4-2. Washington got their annual matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round and Washington finally was able to move on in a six-game series. Tampa Bay and Washington met in the Eastern Conference Finals and the Capitals were able to move on in a tough seven-game series.
Vegas and Washington met twice during the regular season. The first meeting was back on December 23 in Vegas and the Golden Knights took the game 3-0. Fleury was in net and turned away 26 shots. The second meeting of the season was on February 4, where the Golden Knights won 4-3 in Washington.
Washington Capitals (+128) Vs. Vegas Golden Knights (-141)
Braden Holtby will be in net for the Capitals in Game 1. Holtby did not start the first two games of the playoffs but won his job back after Philipp Grubauer struggled. Holtby has a .924 save percentage and a GAA of 2.04. Marc-Andre Fleury will be in net for Vegas as he looks to win his third straight Stanley Cup. Fleury has posted a save percentage of .947 and a GAA of 1.68.
The Capitals could be without Brooks Orpik and Devante Smith-Pelly in Game 1. Both players are listed as probable. William Carrier and backup goalie Malcolm Subban are both questionable for Game 1. Marc-Andre Fleury is almost a guarantee to play, but he has been nursing a lower back injury. The odds have the Golden Knights listed at a -141 money line, which implies they will win this game 59 percent of the time. Vegas does have home ice advantage, but the percentage is a little high for Game 1.
Neither of these teams has gotten a good feel for each other so the odds should be a little lower in my opinion. Both teams have earned their right to be here and it is going to be a great series. Ovechkin has looked like a man on a mission in this playoff run and I believe that could continue in Game 1. The Capitals gained steam and had less time off, which kills momentum. I believe Washington has a legitimate shot to pull off the upset in Game 1.
