FC Porto Vs. Liverpool Betting Preview

Even though this one may seem like a done deal after Liverpool’s 2-0 victory in the first leg at home, their challenging schedule back home means there’s still an opportunity for their Portuguese counterparts to spring a surprise or two. A victory here would mean that Jürgen Klopp’s side would make a return to the final four for the second year in a row – and the advantages accrued in the first leg men that most betting considerations should be made through the lens of the Reds’ domestic commitments. Porto may not be expected to turn things around, but they could do enough damage to consider spread betting on this one.

Don’t let the VAR shenanigans fool you: Liverpool was really quite comfortable in their first leg against Porto, and the 2-0 victory wasn’t exactly an upset result if you consider the 5-0 aggregate win racked up by them the last time around. The same two sides met in the last 16 in 2018, and there’s little to suggest that the return leg will be as action-packed as the same fixture then where the Reds all but guaranteed their progression with a five-goal victory. Porto have never even come close to replicating the glory days with José Mourinho at the helm, failing to even make the semis after the manager’s departure in 2004.

Liverpool’s titanic struggle in their close title race with Man City could tempt Klopp to rest some key players after their comfortable win in the first leg, further opening the door for the Portuguese side. Getting eliminated from here would be a throw of historic proportions, and it’s certainly not a likely one, but there’s also no real reason to expect Liverpool to push for a victory away from home from a 2-0 lead and other things on their mind.

Last year, they followed up their dominant 0-5 away win with a low-key goalless affair at home, and it would make sense for the EPL side to pursue a similar strategy here. Even if Porto score early, their lack of an away goal means there’s still quite the mountain to climb for them in this tie, and the bookmakers seem correct in not giving any credit whatsoever to the idea that they can engineer a Manchester United-esque turnaround.

This makes the +105 odds offered on their victory pretty much a waste of time, and the almost identical offerings for a home win (+240) and a draw (+235) also isn’t helping much. However, the aforementioned factors make the -121 offered for a Porto +0.5 a very reasonable proposition, especially when you consider the fact that they’ve scored in every single home game so far this season.
