San Antonio Spurs vs Detroit Pistons Prediction
Detroit enters the night after a loss to the Magic on Thursday night. The Spurs are on a three-game winning streak. San Antonio has been the better team on the season. The Spurs are in third place in the Eastern Conference with a 25-11 record. The Pistons are fourth place in the Western Conference. Detroit has gone 19-15. San Antonio hosted the Pistons back on December 4. The game came down to the wire, but the Spurs won 96-93 in the end.
Reggie Jackson finished with 27 points, while Andre Drummond scored eleven and pulled down 15 rebounds. Jackson and Drummond were not enough for the Pistons though as seven Spurs players dropped double-digits in points. A key player missing for San Antonio was Kawhi Leonard. The Spurs are 2-3 with Leonard in the lineup.
Detroit has run into injury issues recently. Avery Bradley has been out of the lineup since December 14. Bradley could return against the Spurs, but it is unlikely. Reggie Jackson went down with an ankle injury two games ago. Jackson will be out six to eight weeks. The Pistons will need players to step up in their absence. Tobias Harris leads the Pistons in points per game on the season. Harris has been averaging 18.2 points per game, along with 5.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists.
Andre Drummond has been averaging 14.3 points per game and 15 rebounds. Drummond also averages almost four assists. Drummond and Harris will need some help, but if they both have good games, it could be enough to pull off the upset. With Leonard out of the lineup for most of the season, LaMarcus Aldridge has been the leader for the Spurs. Aldridge has averaged 22.2 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game. Both his points per game and rebounds per game lead the team. In his five games back, Leonard has averaged 12.6 points per game.
San Antonio Spurs -6 ½ (-115) at Detroit Pistons +6 ½ (-105)
The Spurs have been a very defensive team once again this season. The Spurs have the 4th best defensive rating this season. San Antonio’s defensive rating, which shows points allowed per 100 possessions, is 104. Detroit is 16th in offensive rating, with a rating of 107.2. The Pistons have a much better defensive rating, which is 106.4. That ranks 9th in the NBA. Both teams will be looking to establish themselves defensively early in the game.
The Pistons are hurting right now, but they still have a solid team. The Spurs are laying six and a half points. That is a lot of points to lay on the road. On top of that, there is a better payout on the Pistons. Detroit will have a difficult time pulling off the victory in this matchup, but I believe they will keep it close.
