Georgia Bulldogs vs Oklahoma Sooners Prediction

Georgia and Oklahoma each get their first taste of college football playoff action on Monday night. The Bulldogs will enter the game after going 12-1 this season. Georgia won the SEC Championship game against Auburn in their last game. Oklahoma is coming off a win in the Big 12 Championship against TCU.

In the Big 12 Championship game, the Sooners dominated TCU 41-17. Baker Mayfield threw for 243 yards and 4 touchdowns. Oklahoma forced two turnovers and scored a defensive touchdown as well. Georgia got their chance for revenge against Auburn in the SEC Championship game. Auburn won the first meeting 40-17, but Georgia won last game 28-7. Now Georgia’s balanced attack will face-off against Oklahoma’s strong offense.

The Sooners offense has been led by Baker Mayfield all season long. Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy this season. He threw for 4340 yards and 41 touchdowns. Mayfield only threw 5 interceptions on 369 attempts. He also ran for 310 yards and 5 touchdowns. Mayfield will look to finish off a great season with a National Championship. One of Georgia’s best players offensively has been Nick Chubb. Chubb has run for 1175 yards this season on 191 attempts. He has 13 touchdowns.

Sony Michel, who is the change of pace back for the Bulldogs, has run for 948 yards on 131 attempts. Michel has 13 touchdowns as well. If Georgia’s rushing game can outplay Baker Mayfield, then Georgia can grab the upper hand. Mayfield has been terrific in big games though. Georgia has been a balanced team on both sides of the ball this season. The Bulldogs have averaged around 434 yards per game offensively. Georgia has been a run dominate team. They have averaged 264 yards per game on the ground. The Bulldogs have allowed opposing teams to get an average of 271 yards per game. 158 of those yards come from the passing game.

Georgia Bulldogs -2 ½ (-110) at Oklahoma Sooners +2 ½ (-110)

Oklahoma has been an offensive team this season. The Sooners average 583 yards per game. Baker Mayfield averages 367 yards per game through the air. Oklahoma has difficulty stopping opposing teams though. They allow teams to get an average of 385 yards per game. I believe the Bulldogs will need to shut down the Sooners offense if they want to win this game. Oklahoma has been battle-tested multiple times in big games.

Their biggest victory came in Ohio State. The Sooners beat the Buckeyes 31-16. Georgia is 3-1 against ranked opponents. Two of those wins were against number twenty-four and seventeen though. Georgia will have their true test on Monday night. As an underdog in this game, I like the Sooners. Mayfield has proven to step up when his team needs him most. The Bulldogs have had a magical season, but I am not sure if it can continue. Laying two and a half points with Georgia does not seem like a great pick to me. I am going with Oklahoma.
