Free NHL Bets and Picks: Chicago Looks to Upset Philadelphia on the Road
Seven games are on the schedule for Thursday night. Taylor Hall gets another chance to beat his former team and Tampa Bay and Los Angeles battle for supremacy. With a load of exciting games on, here are the matchups I believe are the best picks. Odds for all November 9 games can be found at BetOnline.
Chicago Blackhawks (+102) at Philadelphia Flyers (-113)
The Chicago Blackhawks are battling for arguably the best division in hockey. Six of the seven teams in the Blackhawks division have an above .500 record. The Flyers have stumbled recently, going 3-4-2 in their last nine games. Both teams sit at a 7-6-2 record.
The Blackhawks are one year removed from finishing as the best team in the Western Conference. After being swept out in the first round of the playoffs, the Blackhawks brought in players like Brandon Saad and Patrick Sharp, both of which played for Chicago earlier in their careers, to try and rejuvenate the offense. Saad has scored six goals and added three assists. Sharp has not been able to get much going. He has scored two goals and two assists.
The Flyers have boasted one of the top lineups in all of the hockey. Sean Couturier, Jakub Voracek and Claude Giroux. Together this trio has scored twenty goals and thirty-three assists. Couturier and Voracek lead the bunch with eighteen points each. Giroux is slightly behind with seventeen. Shayne Gostisbehere has been off to a hot start after having a down year last season. He has put up fourteen points, but only one of those is a goal. He will need to find the back of the net more often if he wants to help get the offense going.
Brian Elliott and Corey Crawford are expected to meet in net for Thursday nights battle. Elliott was picked up in the offseason by Philadelphia to help fix their goaltending problems. Early in the season, Elliott has not performed up to expectations. He has posted a .892 save percentage and a GAA of 3.11.
Crawford has been much better for Chicago. He has posted a .945 save percentage and a 1.77 GAA. In his twelve games played he has posted a 7-5 record. His offense will need to give him some more help if he is going to improve his record.
Chicago Blackhawks vs Philadelphia Flyers Prediction
Patrick Kane leads the team in points with fourteen, he is followed by Ryan Hartman and captain Jonathan Toews who each have ten. The Blackhawks scored forty-three goals, which is nineteenth in the league. Ten of those goals came from their first game of the season against the Penguins.
The Blackhawks hosted the Flyers on November 1, in that game they were able to win 3-0. Crawford and Elliott met in that game. I believe the Blackhawks will have the chance to get another win against the Flyers on the road. Chicago’s edge on goaltending could give them the boost needed to get back on track, starting with another win against Philadelphia.
Edmonton Oilers (-120) at New Jersey Devils (+109)
The Edmonton Oilers have stumbled to start the season after making it to the second round of last year’s playoffs. The Devils failed to make the playoffs last year, but have been able to jump out to a 9-4-1 start.
The Oilers enter the game as a road favorite with implied odds of 54.55 percent. To say the Oilers could win this game on the road 55 percent of the time seems ridiculous to me. The Devils have been the better team early in the season and have gone 4-2 at home this year. I believe the Devils are the best bet in this matchup as underdogs at home.
New Jersey and Edmonton met on Friday, November 3. The game was held at Rogers Place in Edmonton and the Oilers took the game 6-3. Edmonton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Devils were able to tie it at 2-2 early in the second period. The Oilers answered back with three straight goals from Klefbom, Lucic, and Draisaitl. Brian Gibbons made it a 5-3 game, but Nugent-Hopkins iced the game with an empty-netter.
Now the game will be held in New Jersey where the Devils will be looking for vengeance. Ex-Oiler Taylor Hall has been leading the team in points this season with seventeen. Help from rookies Will Butcher, Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt has been a large reason why the Devils have maintained their success.
Edmonton Oilers vs New Jersey Devils Prediction
The Oilers have not been able to get the offense going all season. Edmonton sits last in the league with only thirty-two goals scored. The offense has not been able to keep it going after the dominating win against the Devils. In the Oilers last two games they were only able to score two goals, one of which was in overtime.
The Oilers have been relying on Cam Talbot to keep them in games. Talbot has posted a .909 save percentage and a GAA of 2.99. The Devils has average around 3.5 goals per game. If the Devils can beat Talbot early, it will force the Oilers to try and keep up, which they have been unsuccessful at doing all season.
