Free NHL Bets and Picks: Edmonton’s Lethal Offense Meets Against Winnipeg’s Failing Defense
Monday night has seven games on in the NHL. After sixteen games over the weekend the NHL season is just beginning. Every team has opened up the season, some has played as many as three games. Here are my free NHL picks for October 9. All picks will be used from BetOnline.
Winnipeg Jets +1½ (-205) at Edmonton Oilers -1½ (+175)
Both the Oilers and Jets have played two games this season. The Oilers are sitting at 1-1, while the Jets have fallen to 0-2. This marks the first of three meetings between the two teams. Last season the Oilers took the season series 3-0. The Oiler won by three goals in two of the games last season.
The Jets have had a rough start to the season. The Jets have been outscored 13-5 throughout the first two games of the season. The Jets have started out the season with an abysmal 1-11 power play, while going only 6-10 on the penalty kill.
The Oilers haven’t had much better luck on the power play going 1-7, but the penalty killers have done their job well. The Oilers have killed 7 of 8 penalties. While neither team has been successful on special teams, the Oilers have the edge elsewhere.
The Canucks pulled the upset off against the Oilers in a 3-2 game on Saturday night. The Oilers and Connor McDavid will be trying to get back in the win column. McDavid was held without a point against Vancouver, right after starting the season with a hat trick against Calgary.
The Oilers came into this season only behind the Pittsburgh Penguins in odds to win the Stanley Cup. Although the Oilers are 1-1 to start the season, I believe they have shown they can compete at a Stanley Cup level. To start this season the Oilers have outshot their opponents 80-53. If Edmonton can continue to outshoot their opponents at this rate, the goals will come.
The Oilers have a deep forward core and they could likely light up the lamp against a struggling Jets core at home. I believe the Oilers will exploit the Jets defense for a multi-goal victory.
Washington Capitals (+108) at Tampa Bay Lightning (-119)
The Capitals have opened up the new season red-hot. Led by captain Alex Ovechkin, who has seven goals in two games. Tampa Bay started the season out 1-1 splitting a two-game series with state rival, Florida Panthers.
Tampa Bay won against Florida at home, but lost on the road. The Lightning have been led by Brayden Point, who has 5 points (2 goals and 3 assists), and Kucherov, Namestnikov and Stamkos, who all have 3 points.
The Lightning haven’t had great goaltending, Vasilevskiy, who is expected to play Monday, has a 4.07 GAA and a .905 save percentage. The Lightning will need to do a better job keeping the puck out of the net Monday if they want a chance against the Capitals.
The Capitals have looked like a team on a mission to start the season. The Capitals have high hopes that this year they are finally able to overcome their playoff issues. Alexander Ovechkin has seven goals and Evgeny Kuznetsov has added an assist on every one of Ovechkin’s goals. This duo does not look like it is slowing down anytime soon.
The Capitals as road underdogs seem like a perfect pick. The Lightning look to be a good team this season, but the Capitals are playing on a level above all other teams right now. Until the Capitals are proven to be dethroned, I don’t believe you should bet against them.
