Washington Capitals vs New York Islanders Prediction
The NHL week will begin with a matchup between two teams in the Metropolitan Division. The Islanders are sitting tied for the fourth seed in the standings with a 16-10-3 record. New York is coming off a four-game road trip in which they went 1-2-1. Washington is in second place of the Metropolitan. The Capitals are 18-11-1. The Capitals have been red-hot recently. They have won eight of their last ten games.
The first matchup between these two teams came back on November 2. The game was hosted in Washington and was a close game throughout. Washington was never down in the game, but they were never winning by more than one goal either. In the end, the Capitals won 4-3. Lars Eller had two goals and an assist for the Capitals. One of his goals included the game winner. Anders Lee scored two goals and added a helper as well. Unfortunately for the Islanders, it was not enough in the end.
Braden Holtby and Jaroslav Halak each got the start for their teams in the first game, and it is expected to be the same for Monday night. Holtby has been the better of the two goalies so far this season. Holtby has been posting elite numbers. His save percentage is at a .921 and he has a 2.57 GAA. Holtby stopped thirty-five of thirty-eight shots in the first game. If he can do this again, it will be hard for the Islanders to find the back of the net.
Washington Capitals (+109) at New York Islanders (-120)
Halak has been shaky this season. Halak’s save percentage is a .905 and he has allowed around 2.93 goals per game. Halak is coming off a solid performance in his last game against the Bruins. In the end though, the Bruins won 3-1. Halak will be relied on if the Islanders want to get the win.
This matchup will put two of the NHL’s best stars against each other. John Tavares is second on the Islanders in points and is tied for the lead in goals. He has seventeen goals and fourteen assists. Tavares will meet his match as he plays future Hall of Famer Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin leads the team in points and goals. Ovechkin has scored twenty-one times and added twelve assists. Each will be trying to lead their team on Monday night.
I believe that both teams have the firepower to win, but the Capitals have a more reliable goaltender. Holtby has gone toe-to-toe with the best. The Islanders are -120, but I believe this game should have each team listed around -105. As an underdog in the matchup, I believe the Capitals are a great pick.
