New Jersey Devils vs New York Islanders Predictions
Both teams stumble into Sunday’s matchup on losing streaks. The Devils have lost four in a row, and five straight on the road. New Jersey is 22-11-7 this season, which puts them in second place in the Metropolitan Division. The Islanders enter Sunday losers of five straight. New York has been outscored 25-8 during the losing streak. The Islanders are 20-18-4 on the season, which puts them seventh in the Metropolitan.
The Islanders are a much better scoring team. John Tavares and Josh Bailey lead the team with fifty points each. Tavares has scored twenty-two goals, while Bailey has scored twelve. Anders Lee has scored thirty-nine points. Matthew Barzal has added another thirty-seven points. The Islanders can score plenty of goals, but they have difficulty keeping the puck out of their own net.
The Devils point leader this season has been Taylor Hall. Hall has scored fourteen goals and added twenty-six assists. Jesper Bratt and Nico Hischier are both tied for second with twenty-six points. Fourth on the team is Will Butcher. Butcher has twenty-four points. With three rookies in the top-four in points, the Devils can have an inconsistent scoring attack. Taylor Hall’s veteran presence has been able to keep the points stable. If Hall can continue to do what he does best, then the Devils could beat a weak Islanders defense.
New Jersey Devils (+109) at New York Islanders (-120)
The Islanders goalies have combined for terrible numbers this season. Both goalies have a combined .895 save percentage and a GAA of 3.50. Jaroslav Halak has been slightly better. He has allowed a GAA of 3.22 and a save percentage of .904. Thomas Greiss has a .882 save percentage and a 3.89 GAA. Whichever goalie gets the start will need to step up if the Islanders are to break this losing streak.
Corey Schneider is expected to play in net for the Devils. Schneider has not played his best hockey, but he is a big reason why the Devils find themselves second in the Metropolitan Division. Schneider has a .919 save percentage and a GAA of 2.64. If he can shut down the Islanders lethal attack, the Devils should be able to score enough to get a win. This matchup will be the first of four between these two teams. The Devils are the better defensive team, but they can score as well. New Jersey is listed at a +109 money line, which gives them a forty-eight percent chance to win. I believe the Devils are better than that line shows. I am going with the Devils on the road.
