Tampa Bay Lightning vs St. Louis Blues Prediction
The top two teams in the NHL faceoff for the second time this season on Tuesday night. Both teams are sitting at forty-four points at this point in the season. St. Louis has gone 21-8-2, while the Lightning have gone 21-6-2. One of these two teams will take the lead of the NHL after Tuesday night’s matchup.
St. Louis was informed terrible news last Sunday. Jaden Schwartz will be out six to eight weeks with an ankle injury. Schwartz is second on the Blues in points. He has scored fourteen goals and added twenty-one assists. The Blues will need someone to step up in Schwartz’s absence. The Blues and Lightning met for the first time back in October 14. The game was in Tampa Bay and the Lightning got the win by a score of 2-1. Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov each scored a goal for the Lightning. Vladimir Tarasenko scored the only goal for the Blues, which came off an assist from Schwartz.
Tampa Bay has found a lot of success on the power play this season. The Lightning have scored on 28.44 percent of their power plays. They have been the best team in the entire NHL on the power play. St. Louis’s penalty kill will be forced with the difficult task of stopping them. The Blues have only stopped 79.17 percent of their opponent’s power play opportunities.
The Blues power play has been a bit of a struggle. St. Louis has scored on 16.81 percent of their power plays. The Lightning have been a solid penalty killing team. They have an 82.61 percent success rate when killing off penalties. St. Louis will need to do a much better job on both sides of special teams if they want to win this game.
Tampa Bay Lightning (-110) at St. Louis Blues (+100)
The Blues top line will be without Schwartz on Tuesday night, so Brayden Schenn and Vladimir Tarasenko will need to continue to step up. Schenn has sixteen goals and twenty-one assists, while Tarasenko has fourteen goals and nineteen assists. It will be interesting to see how St. Louis’ top line does without Schwartz.
The Lighting’s success can largely be credited to Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos. Kucherov has scored twenty goals and has a total of twenty-one assists. Stamkos has scored twelve times, while adding thirty helpers. The duo of Kucherov and Stamkos has been nearly unstoppable so far this season and I expect the Blues to have difficulty with it Tuesday night.
The line for this game started at Tampa Bay -118 and has since moved to Tampa Bay -110. I believe it should be moving the other way, so this is a great pick to make at the time being. The Lightning have been a better team on special teams and St. Louis will be trying to figure out how to fix the lineup in Schwartz’s absence.
