Washington Capitals vs. Columbus Blue Jackets Predictions
The Capitals enter the night down 2-0 in the series. Washington has struggled in the playoffs in the past, but very few could have predicted the Capitals dropping the first two games at home. Washington finished the season in first place of the Metropolitan Division with a 49-26-7 record.
Columbus was a very streaky team throughout the regular season, which led them to a 45-30-7 record in the regular season. The Blue Jackets finished fourth place in the Metropolitan Division and in the first wild card spot. Now the Blue Jackets look to complete their first-round upset with a pair of victories at home.
The Capitals won the regular season series against the Blue Jackets 3-1. Washington took the first three games by a combined score of 11-7. Columbus took the final meeting of the season at home on February 26 by a score of 5-1.
In game 1, the Capitals jumped out to a 2-0 lead early on back-to-back goals by Evgeny Kuznetsov. Columbus battled back through to tie it up at 3-3 before the end of regulation. Six minutes into the overtime, Artemi Panarin buried the puck to give Columbus a 1-0 lead in the series. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 27 of 30 shots. Philip Grubauer turned away 23 shots.
Washington looked to tie up the series at 1-1, and it showed on the scoreboard. The Capitals had a 3-1 lead early in the second period with help from two goals by Alex Ovechkin. Columbus stormed back in the second period though and took a 4-3 lead going into the third period. T.J. Oshie tied it up, but a goal by Matt Calvert in overtime gave the Blue Jackets the win. Bobrovsky stopped 54 shots. Grubauer got pulled from the game after allowing 4 goals on 22 shots. Braden Holtby had 7 saves in relief. The Blue Jackets will be missing Alexander Wennberg and Lukas Sedlak for Game 3. Washington will be without Andre Burakovsky and Travis Boyd.
Washington Capitals (+122) at Columbus Blue Jackets (-135)
Columbus will be starting Bobrovsky, who has been phenomenal throughout these playoffs. He has a .920 save percentage and a 3.04 GAA. Braden Holtby is expected to get the start for Washington, but it could be unknown who will get the start until right before the game. Both Capitals goalies have posted a save percentage below .900 in this season’s playoff.
The Capitals are going to come out desperate to avoid falling to the brink of elimination. Washington has lost both games in overtime, which shows that they were two shots away from being up in this series 2-0. The Capitals have played very competitive games against the Blue Jackets and I do not see them falling down 3-0 in the series.
The Capitals are listed at +122, which is a reasonable number for a team going on the road in any playoff game. I believe that the Capitals are going to win this game, so any underdog line seems good to me. The Blue Jackets are going to be playing in front of a loud home crowd, but I do not think they are ready for the offensive attack the Capitals will be coming with.
