Washington Capitals Vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Predictions
The Lightning has looked like a Stanley Cup Contending team ever since the season started. Tampa Bay finished the season as the top team in the Eastern Conference with a 54-23-5 record. The Lightning beat New Jersey in the first round in a five-game series. Tampa Bay then went on to beat the Boston Bruins in five games to advance to the Conference Finals.
Washington has put together the most complete playoff run in the Ovechkin era this season. The Capitals booked their first ticket to the Conference Finals since 1998 behind a 49-26-7 record in the regular season. Washington finished as the top team in the Metropolitan Division. The Capitals went on to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets in six games in the first round. Washington then pulled off a very impressive series against Pittsburgh as they knocked them off in six games.
The Capitals pulled off an upset in Game 1 in Tampa Bay. Alex Ovechkin had a goal and an assist as Washington won 4-2. Evgeny Kuznetsov and T.J. Oshie each had two assists. Braden Holtby turned 19 of 21 shots away. Washington had another road victory in Game 2. The Capitals dominated with a 6-2 win. Lars Eller and Evgeny Kuznetsov each had a goal and two assists. Holtby had another great performance with 33 saves.
Game 3 shifted back to Washington with the Capitals in control of the series. Tampa Bay pulled the series closer with a 4-2 win. Victor Hedman had a goal and two assists to lead the Lightning to victory. Andrei Vasilevskiy turned away 36 shots in the win. Game 4 was no different than the first three games as the road team won. Tampa Bay had a 4-2 victory to tie up the series at 2-2. Brayden Point had a goal and an assist. Vasilevskiy had 36 saves.
Washington Capitals (+128) Vs. Tampa Bay Lightning (-141)
Tampa Bay hosted Game 5 and the Lightning was finally able to win in front of their home crowd. Ryan Callahan scored a goal and an assist in route to a 3-2 win. Vasilevskiy had 28 saves on 30 shots. Game 6 was back on Monday night and Washington was able to force Game 7 with a win in front of their home crowd. T.J. Oshie scored two goals and Nicklas Backstrom had two assists as the Capitals coasted to a 3-0 win. Holtby had a 24 shot shutout.
Adam Erne is questionable for Game 7 for the Lightning as he is dealing with a lower-body injury. Washington has been healthy since Nicklas Backstrom entered the lineup again in Game 4. The odds have Tampa Bay pegged as a favorite with a -141 money line, which implies that they will win this game 59 percent of the time. I believe that this game is more of a coin toss and it should show in the money line. The Lightning should be favored because they are the home team, but -141 seems a little high.
The Capitals have shown they can win in Tampa Bay in the first two games of the series and I believe they could pull off the upset again in Game 7. Washington has been led by Alex Ovechkin throughout the series and Ovechkin will be playing with even more emotion with a Stanley Cup appearance on the line. Ovechkin has never reached the finals before and I believe this could be his year. I like Washington as an underdog.
