Free NHL Consensus Playoffs Picks: Penguins vs Capitals (Game 5)
The NHL is host to two more playoff games on Saturday. Both games are pivotal game 5 matchups. One of the matchups is between Washington and Pittsburgh. The Capitals could come one step closer to finally making it past the second round with a win at home on Saturday. That game will be on NBC at 7:00 PM Eastern. Here is my best bet for May 5. Odds can be found at BetOnline.
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Capitals Predictions
The Capitals have been struggling to make it past the Penguins in the last three years of postseason play. Washington has been knocked out by Pittsburgh three times in the last decade, two of those times in the last two years. Washington finished the regular season at 49-26-7, which earned them the top spot in the Metropolitan Division. Pittsburgh was 47-29-6 at the end of the regular season. The Penguins finished in second place of the Metropolitan.
Washington hosted the first matchup of the series and came out looking to get the Game 1 win. Alex Ovechkin had a goal and an assist as Washington jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the third period. The Penguins were not done though. Jake Guentzel scored a goal and had two assists as Pittsburgh came back to win 3-2. Matt Murray had 32 saves. Braden Holtby had 22 saves.
Game 2 was once again in Washington and this time the Capitals were not going to blow their lead. The Capitals were able to win 4-1. Lars Eller had three assists. Holtby turned away 32 of 33 shots. Murray had 28 saves.
Game 3 shifted back to Pittsburgh and was a great game. After a scoreless first period, the Penguins were able to lead 3-2 after two. Matt Niskanen and Alex Ovechkin each scored in the third period as the Capitals won 4-3. Niklas Backstrom had three assists for Washington. Sidney Crosby and Guentzel each had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh.
The Penguins made the most of their opportunities in Game 4 and were able to come out with a 3-1 win. Jake Guentzel scored twice, and Evgeni Malkin added a goal in route to the win. Holtby had 21 saves. Murray turned away 20 shots.
Andre Burakovsky is out for Washington with an upper body injury, while Tom Wilson is out with a three-game suspension for a hit in Game 3. Zach Anton-Reese is the only player out for Pittsburgh. He was on the receiving end of the hit from Wilson.
Braden Holtby will be in net for Washington in Game 5. Holtby has a save percentage of .924 and a 2.07 GAA in this year’s playoff run. Matt Murray is expected to be in net for Pittsburgh. Murray has a .909 save percentage and a GAA of 2.33.
Penguins (+100) at Capitals (-110) Pick and Odds
This series has been evenly matched and very exciting. The whole momentum has been able to swing back and fourth in each game. I believe that coming back home will be an advantage for the Capitals, but Pittsburgh still has a chance to steal the game. Washington has been constantly frustrated by the Penguins and I believe this is the year the Capitals are able to make it past them. To do so though, Washington is going to need a big Game 5 victory. Alex Ovechkin has been doing everything he can to help get the Capitals the wins and I expect that to continue.
The line has this game to very close to even. Washington is the slight favorite, but I believe they should be more than -110 because of their play. The Capitals are at home and playing toe to toe with Pittsburgh in each game. Tom Wilson’s absence from the lineup hurts, but not enough to drop the money line this much. I like Alex Ovechkin in front of his home crowd.
