Free NHL Picks For Tonight (Nov 16): Hurricanes vs Islanders Prediction
Thursday night offers twelve NHL hockey games. A busy night like that packs many upsets and overtime thrillers. Here are some of my best bets for November 16. Odds can be found at BetOnline.
Carolina Hurricanes (+114) at New York Islanders (-126)
The Islanders will play their first game since November 11 on Thursday night. A five-day break can be both a blessing or a curse. It could help a team if they are having injury issues or the team is just struggling, but it can also kill momentum. Last Saturday the Islanders were able to pull off a 5-2 upset in St. Louis. New York has gone 9-6-2 on the season, giving them a tie for fifth place in the division.
Carolina enters Thursday night’s game with a 7-5-4 record. The Hurricanes are tied for last place in the division, but have played fewer games then every other team in their division. Carolina has been able to get a point in their last five games. In those five games, the Hurricanes have gone 3-0-2. The Hurricanes last game was against the Stars on Monday night. Carolina dominated that game 5-1.
Carolina has been able to get solid goaltending from both the starter and the backup. Scott Darling has put up a .910 save percentage to go along with a 2.37 GAA. Darling was acquired in the offseason to help the Hurricanes improve and so far, he has delivered good numbers. Cam Ward has taken over the backup role this season and has excelled in it. Ward has a save percentage of .920 and a GAA of 2.78. While Darling is expected to get the start, the Hurricanes can throw Ward out there against the Islanders and he can deliver just as well.
New York has not had the same great goaltending Carolina has had. The Islanders starting goalie Jaroslav Halak has posted a .898 save percentage and a GAA of 3.05. Thomas Greiss has not done much better. He has a .905 save percentage and a 3.28 GAA. Halak is expected to get the start, but he will need to step up if the Islanders are to beat the Hurricanes.
With the goaltending struggling, the Islanders have needed offensive production to help balance out the team. John Tavares has delivered in that aspect, leading the team in goals and points. He has scored thirteen times and added six assists. Josh Bailey and Anders Lee follow closely behind with eighteen and seventeen points respectively. Jordan Eberle, who was traded for in the offseason, has produced well. In his first seventeen games with the team, he has added thirteen points.
Carolina Hurricanes vs New York Islanders Prediction
The Hurricanes have not relied on a single player to score like the Islanders have done at times. Last game against Dallas, Teuvo Teravainen scored a hat trick to help give the Hurricanes the win. Teravainen, Jordan Staal and Justin Williams lead the team, each with thirteen points. Jeff Skinner leads in goals with nine. He has also added two assists. If the Hurricanes can continue to find scoring across the board, they could find success against the Islanders.
The Islanders are listed with a -126 money line, which implies they will win the game about fifty-six percent of the time. I believe that this game is just about even. Each team has struggled to find consistency. I believe as an underdog riding a five-game point streak, the Hurricanes are the best bet in this matchup.
