Houston Cougars Vs. Kentucky Wildcats March Madness Expert Picks

Kentucky is grateful to be in a part of the March Madness bracket where they had to face OK competition, but not quite as challenging as other teams. The Wildcats will have the first real test when taking on the Houston Cougars in the Sweet Sixteen. Since Kentucky loss the first game of the season in a blowout against Duke, we haven’t really taken them seriously. It might not be fair, but that’s the truth. As long as the Wildcats are coached by John Calipari, they will have a shot to get far in the tournament. We should remember that.

The oddsmakers at MyBookie.ag have them at +1400 to win the title. They are in the second line of programs with chances to win it all. Before them are Duke, Gonzaga, Virginia and North Carolina. That gives the Wildcats around a 7% chances to add another championship banner. To get to this point, Kentucky beat both the Abilene Christian Wildcats (79-44) and the Wofford Terriers (62-56). Against Wofford, it was noticeable the game plan was to dry out Fletcher Magee. The best three-point player in the history of College Basketball had eight points while going 0-12 from beyond the arc. The Wildcats’ suffocating defense was a huge factor.

Houston didn’t find any problem beating the Georgia State Panthers 84-55 in the first round and the Ohio State Buckeyes 74-59 in the second. The Cougars only dropped three games the entire season. Of course, their schedule was not as demanding as other schools, but it is an achievement to lose so few games. The Cougars’ success is based on defense as they ranked seventh in scoring defense in the nation. Their discipline to go for the loose balls makes them hard to beat. Houston out-rebounded Georgia State 51-27 in the first game of the tournament and won the battle once against 37-31 against Ohio State.

The betting line opened with the Wildcats at 2.5-point favorites at MyBookie.ag. The higher the line got was up to 3-points before going back to 2.5. 54% of the betting public is siding with Kentucky in this one. Kentucky was built to handle this type of teams, and the spread doesn’t seem to be high enough to find value in the underdog. The Wildcats have top prospects on their side, with an experienced coach. But also, they are tournament proven; meaning they have faced tougher competition across the year.

Houston is not used to losing, and that’s great, but this is the biggest challenge they have faced all season. The two best teams they played this season were Oregon and Cincinnati. When they met the Ducks early in the season, Oregon was not the same team that is currently in the Sweet Sixteen. And Cincinnati was eliminated as soon as the first round. What’s the play?
