Hurricanes Vs. Islanders Predictions | NHL Divisional Finals Game 1 Picks
Carolina Hurricanes at NY Islanders Betting Preview
It’s been a while since we saw the New York Islanders take the ice. Nine days will pass between their last meeting against the Pittsburgh Penguins and the second-round playoffs clash against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes can’t say the same having played double overtime just two nights before they had to start thinking about the Isles. It should be a fun series.
The rest factor is on the side of the Islanders after sweeping the Penguins in the first round. But will rest become rust? That’s always the question is this type of scenarios. Nine days resting is a long time for any team that is used to play every other day for the past six months.
With the elimination of Washington in seven games, the Islanders are listed as third favorites to win the Stanley Cup at +600. MyBookie.ag also has the St. Louis Blues and the Columbus Blue Jackets with the same price. The favorite entering the second round is the Boston Bruins at +450, followed by San Jose Sharks at +500. With those odds, the Isles have an implied probability of 14% to win the Stanley Cup entering Game 1. Those odds might change depending on the results of the first few games in the series. But right now that looks like excellent odds, especially after they destroyed Pittsburgh in the first round.
The series price also has New York as the favorite, listed -125 to advance. It doesn’t look like the asking price is high enough for an Islanders team that’s good enough to make a deep run in the playoffs. In fact, with Carolina at +105 to win this second round clash and advance, this is the closest series MyBookie has to offer out of the four available. Carolina is going into this series with huge momentum.
I think the Hurricanes earned the respect of many by entering Washington as big underdogs and leaving the ice with a double-overtime win. It wasn’t the fact that they won a Game 7 on the road, but how they did. Twice they were down two goals, and they didn’t panic at all. In front, of them were the Stanley Cup champs.
Now for this game one, we need to figure out which will have more of a negative impact for teams, either rust or fatigue. Carolina didn’t look tired during the overtime against Washington, but they might in Game 1 against New York, especially in the third period. I have the Islanders as a solid pick in the money line, but I don’t expect a win by more than two scores, so I’ll take the Hurricanes in the puck like as well. What’s the play? Carolina +1.5
Money line: Carolina +110 vs. NY Islanders -130
Puck line: Carolina +1.5 (-265) vs New York -1.5 (+215)
Game total: 5.5
