Iowa Vs. Penn State – College Football Week 9 Picks
Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Penn State Nittany Lions Prediction
The Nittany Lions are 6-point favorites for this game at home, but they haven’t been playing like they deserve that much credit. In fact, I’m off the Penn State bandwagon. The James Franklin experience has been lousy over the last three weeks. They have lost to Ohio State, Michigan State and barely beat Indiana. The Lions failed to cover the spread during their last two outings; both times as favorites.
The betting line opened with Penn State as a 5-point favorite. There isn’t much faith about what they can do at home after their recent performances. 62% of the betting public is going with Iowa and the points. Penn State averages 42.9 points per game (9th), but that number is inflated by their excellent showings during the first few weeks of the season. The Nittany Lions have only scored 25.3 points per game in their last three outings. In fact, Senior QB Trace McSorley has been below average throwing only three touchdown passes and one interception in those games. Against Indiana, he needed his scrambling abilities to bail him out.
Iowa is quietly 6-1 this season with three wins in a row while covering the spread each time. They recently shut down Maryland with a 23-0 victory and the week before hammered Indiana 42-16. The Hawkeyes feed their energy from their defensive talent. As a unit, Iowa’s defense allows only 14.1 points per game this season (5th). A win over Penn State would put them just where they want to be; at the top of the Big Ten West division. This will be only the second game of the season where they don’t jump out as favorites in the betting spread. The other time was against Wisconsin. They were a 3-point dog on the road and lost by 11 points.
Penn State has won four of their last five games against Iowa, but the momentum is not going the Nittany Lions’ way. There are so many doubts about their offense and facing an Iowa defense that is relentless doesn’t help their chances. Take the team that’s playing better entering this game. What’s the play? Iowa +6.
