Juventus vs. Ajax Betting Preview
A hard-fought 1-1 draw in the first leg means that Ajax is still with a chance to pull off another historic giant-killing, but it has to be said that the strength and stability of their opposition is much greater this time around. Unlike the ailing Real Madrid side in dire need of revitalization, Juve is wrapping up yet another domestic title and clearly made the Ronaldo purchase with an eye on the biggest international prize in club football – and their impressive comeback in the round of 16 means they should not be underestimated at home under any circumstances.
This is a nifty little Ajax side, surely the new favorites of the hipster soccer fans out there: drawing 3-3 with Bayern Munich in their final group stage match and completing a famous comeback against back-to-back-to-back Champions League winners Real Madrid may make it seem like they’re the real deal, but both of those sides were dealing with serious systemic issues, something which can’t be said about this Juventus side.
That said, they’re definitely not invulnerable: an unexpected defeat at home to the Mourinho-led Man United in the groups and a 2-0 away loss to Atlético Madrid in the round of 16 were serious blips on the radar. Still, having the luxury to rest your top talent for the Champions League clash is very nice, having wrapped up the league while your opponents are still locked in a struggle with PSV Eindhoven only behind them on goal difference.
Even with the spotlight obviously on Cristiano Ronaldo, keep an eye out for the exciting young talent that is Moise Kean: the in-form striker has pretty much forced his way into manager Massimiliano Allegri’s plans, and it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise in the world to see him in the starting eleven here too. With Ronaldo rested against SPAL – a match where Juventus is pretty much expected to secure their eighth Scudetto in a row –, Juventus’ star man is clearly expected to make the same sort of impact he’s had against Atlético, and the prospect of both those players potentially playing a part in Juve’s offensive moves should surely terrify Ajax fans.
All in all, the Italian giants definitely remain the favorites for this one, and the precious away goal scored by Ronaldo means that a goalless result is already good enough for them to qualify to the semi-finals – a much preferable position to the pit they had to claw themselves out of against Atlético Madrid in the round of sixteen, having to come back from a 2-0 defeat away from home.
At -149, the odds offered for their outright win seems more than reasonable. As impressive as this young Ajax side has been, they’ve not managed to keep a clean sheet in four attempts in the competition, which could very well prove their undoing here considering the attacking talent they’ll have to cope with under the floodlights.
