With the Super Bowl LIV now in the books, the XFL wants to make an immediate impact on those fans thirsty for more football.

Luckily for us, the sportsbooks have put together a few betting lines for XFL Week 1 matchups. I’m not afraid to say I have no idea how the teams or even the league is going to look, but when does that has stopped us from betting on football?

Let’s take a look at the first game of the XFL season — the Los Angeles Wildcats Vs. Houston Roughnecks and the betting odds:

LA Wildcats +5.5 (-105) +5.5 (-108)
Houston Roughnecks -5.5 (-115) -5.5 (-112)

The primetime matchup for Saturday has Houston -5.5 over Los Angeles. I’m still trying to wrap my head around these names. I can deal with the LA Wildcats. It is an easy name to get behind. I might need more time with the Houston Roughnecks.

Why Bet On The Los Angeles Wildcats To Cover The Spread

Los Angeles has 29 active players that managed to play in the NFL. QB Josh Johnson is the biggest name on the team.

Johnson was the backup QB of many teams in the pros. His last appearance was with Detroit 2018-19 season. His TD to INT ratio was eight scores to 14 picks. Somehow, he managed to stay in the league for 11 years. Still, that sort of longevity in the NFL proves he has some talent.

Winston Moss is the head coach of the Wildcats. This will be his first gig as a HC, but he has plenty of experience in the NFL.

Moss entered the NFL as a defensive quality control coach in 1998 with the Seahawks. He spent 11 years with the Green Bay Packers as an assistant head coach/linebackers coach but was let go when the Packers fired HC Mike McCarthy in 2018.

You might remember him for taking a shot at Aaron Rodgers’ leadership. Although in the last few years, who hasn’t?

Wildcats Odds Of Winning The XFL Championship

In our XFL futures betting preview, you can see the Wildcats are between +500 and +700 to win the title. There are four teams with better odds, but they are expected to be competitive.

Expect RB DuJuan Harris to get plenty of carries on Saturday. Harris is the most recognizable face at the running back position. He played for six years in the NFL, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. He also had two career TDs.

Bet The Houston Roughnecks To Cover The Spread

Houston opens at -5.5 at home to beat the LA. For those new betting on football, they need to win by six points to make this bet a winner.

Veteran head coach June Jones returns to professional football for the first time since 1998. Back then, he was the interim coach of the Chargers in 1998, booking a 3-7 record in ten games.

He spent eight years as the head coach of Hawaii, six with SMU, and two with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League. His record with those teams was 112-84, including 7-2 in bowl games.

Decent Looking Offense

QB Connor Cook will be the starter for Houston. You might remember Cook as the Michigan Spartans QB that took the program to the College Football playoffs before getting shut down by Alabama in 2016.

He finished his career with the Spartans with 71 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. Cook was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft but was cut by the team in 2018.

Besides Cook, the name of WR Sammie Coates stands out as the gem of the rest in the roster. Coates is only 26-years old and was picked by the Steelers in the third round of the 2015 draft. He lost his roster spot in Pittsburgh and then bounced around the Browns and Texans before finding a place with the Houston Roughnecks.

Los Angeles Wildcats At Houston Roughnecks Prediction

The style of play that these teams are going to play is still up in the air. But coaching matters a lot in football, and Houston has an edge with June Jones running the show.

Remember, Winston Moss has never been a head coach in pro football.

Also, keep in mind the XFL has these crazy rules to score quickly, especially the one about points after touchdown and the double-forward pass. We aren’t sure what the “key” numbers are yet in the XFL. Covering the spread will take on a different meaning with these new rules — bet Houston -5.5.
