Manchester City Vs. Tottenham Betting Preview
The only “domestic” tie in the quarter-finals stage and perhaps the most finely poised of them all after the first leg, the rematch between Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino promises a fascinating encounter for the fans. The Citizens could have easily taken something out of the first leg, having missed a penalty in the 13th minute, and the close nature of their defeat coupled with the injury to Harry Kane, Tottenham’s star striker, indicates that City are the favorites despite their 1-0 loss the first time around, still chasing a historic quadruple. Even so, the odds floating around are nothing short of ridiculous, which means there’s a neat opportunity to find value with this one.
The fact that two English teams are going up against one another gives us a lot of data to consider, and it has to be said that the recent form does not look good for the away side. Tottenham was eighteenth in the twenty-team form table until their win against twelfth-placed Crystal Palace in their inaugural match at their brand new stadium, a nervy performance which they’ve followed up with a close victory in the first leg of this Champions League tie.
Couple this with the loss of their star striker and the squad’s inexperience at this juncture of the competition, and it makes sense on the surface that they’re offered ridiculous odds for an outright win in the second leg, but not even being favored to qualify from here is really quite extraordinary when you consider the recent record of both Guardiola and his side at the business end of the Champions League.
The Catalan manager has not won away from home against top-tier opposition in this competition since 2011 and has repeatedly come up short in the later stages of the Champions League after his departure from Barcelona. It doesn’t matter much that many pundits think he’s overthinking matters when it comes to these games, but when one of his own players goes on record saying they are “too nervous” in the CL, it’s a different kettle of fish. As for City, they’ve never been to the finals of the competition, and they’ve missed out on the semis last year after losing to Liverpool in the quarter-finals, domestic opponents they were far ahead of in the league. Sounds familiar?
A bit too many abstract stats to justify a bet on the underdog? Perhaps. Still, +900 for the side with the opportunity to play on the counter away from home seems ridiculous, especially when you consider the massive disparity between this and the odds on offer for Tottenham’s mere qualification.
