Memphis Vs. Wake Forest Predictions – Jared Birmingham Bowl Betting Odds
With two entertaining offenses taking the field, the 2018 Birmingham Bowl promise to give us a lot of fireworks early on Saturday. The Tigers vs the Demon Deacons might not sound like the most attractive matchups but believe me, they can score. The oddsmakers at MyBookie.ag are prepared for high-scoring battle. They set up the game total at 73.5 points, the highest of the weekend. Memphis is only a 3-point favorite for this matchup after it opened at 2.5-points. 53% of the betting public is taking Wake Forest with the points.
Memphis Tigers Vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons Bowl Predictions
The reason the betting public is falling in love with Wake Forest for this game is the Demons are battle tested. They play in the ACC, and all season they had to match up against solid programs. We can’t say the same about Memphis and their American Conference schedule. Wake Forest played against four ranked teams in 2018. They had no shot against Notre Dame, Clemson or Syracuse, but they did beat NC State. Let’s face it, the Tigers and the Irish are both in the College Football playoffs. That’s a hard schedule to swallow.
The Demon Deacons are also looking for the third straight bowl win under head coach Dave Clawson after taking down Temple and most recently Texas A&M. Wake Forest scores 32.5 points per game and allows 33.3 this season. And while those might not be impressive numbers, especially on the defensive side, we should look at the bigger picture. They allowed 56 points to Notre Dame, 63 to Clemson and 41 to Syracuse. Those three losses inflated the points against average. The reality is they almost shut down Duke in the 59-7 win to gain a bowl berth in the last game of the season.
Memphis average 43.6 points per game which is impressive by itself. They do it by sticking to the running game, averaging 285.5 rushing yards per game. The Tigers played the same ranked team twice. They were beaten by UCF 31-30 during the regular season and then they were outplayed 56-41 in the conference championship game. The Tigers will miss tailback Darrell Henderson who is now preparing for the 2019 NFL draft. Henderson racked up 1909 rushing yards this season in 214 carries while scoring 22 touchdowns. Memphis offensive production now falls in the hands of RB Patrick Taylor Jr. who wasn’t shy in 2018 either. Taylor Jr. posted 1012 rushing yards and 15 TDs this season. The only issue is they there won’t be a one-two punch combination out of the backfield, and that was the Tiger’s mantra this year.
The absent of Henderson gives a lot of value to Wake Forest, who is a team built to play stronger programs than Memphis. I’m taking the Demon Deacons with the points. The Tigers haven’t won a bowl game since 2014, going 0-3 in their last three presentations. Not having their best player on the field doesn’t help their chances to turnaround their latest bowl losing trend. What’s the play? Wake Forest +3.
