Michigan Wolverines vs Villanova Wildcats Predictions
Michigan enters the matchup after a tough come from behind win against Loyola Chicago. The Wolverines found themselves down as many as ten points in the second half. Michigan, led by Duncan Robinson and Mo Wagner were able to take the lead back with about five minutes left. After that it was a smooth finish for the Wolverines. Michigan ended up with a 69-57 win over #11 seeded Loyola Chicago.
To get to this point in the tournament Michigan has beat #14 seeded Montana, #6 seeded Houston, #7 seeded Texas A&M, #9 seeded Florida St and #11 seeded Loyola Chicago. Wolverines have not been tasked with the most difficult schedule, but they have won the games necessary to get to this point. Michigan’s tightest game came against Houston, when they hit a game winning 3 pointer at the buzzer to give themselves a 1 point victory.
Villanova is coming off an absolute dominant win over Kansas. The Wildcats could not miss a shot in that performance as they cruised to a 95-79 win. Villanova had a .450 percentage from behind the three-point line. Eric Paschall and Donte DiVicenzo went a combined seven of ten from behind the arc. The Wildcats had an even more impressive .720 shooting percentage from inside the arc. If the Wildcats are able to shoot like that again, the Wolverines are going to find themselves in trouble.
Villanova has gone through #16 seeded Radford, #9 seeded Alabama, #5 seeded West Virginia, #3 seeded Texas Tech and #1 seeded Kansas to get to the Championship Game. Villanova has cruised though every game so far. Their closest margin of victory has been their games against West Virginia and Texas Tech. The Wildcats won both those games by twelve points. Michigan will have their work cut out for them to pull off the upset victory.
Michigan Wolverines +6 ½ (-104) vs Villanova Wildcats -6 ½ (-116)
Eric Paschall was guarded by Udoka Azubuike in Villanova’s matchup against Kansas. Azubuike is not great at defending other big men at the three-point line. Paschall exploited that as he went four of five from behind the arc and scored a total of twenty-four points. In tonight’s matchup, Paschall is most likely going to be guarded by Michigan’s Mo Wagner. Wagner, like Paschall, can extend his game behind the three-point line. This will allow Wagner to play much tighter defense. If Wagner can stay out of foul trouble early, Paschall is going to have a much tougher outing.
If Michigan can slow down the Wildcats offense and keep the game at their steadier pace, then this game will be close to the end. The Wolverines have also shown the ability to compete with any team in a shootout as they dropped 99 points on Texas A&M. Michigan has been very undervalued all tournament long and I believe they have the potential to pull off the victory tonight.
The odds for this game started out as -6 ½ in favor of Villanova. The line got up to as much as -7, but since has come back down to -6 ½. The Wolverines are such big underdogs because of how unproven they are in the tournament. Michigan though, has made it this far and it is not by coincidence. I believe that Michigan could keep this game tight until the very end, with some potential of pulling off the upset. Michigan is also listed as -104, which is a better payout. I am taking the Wolverines to cover in the Championship Game
