Betting on the Military Bowl: North Carolina Vs. Temple Betting Line & Pick

Military Bowl 2019 Betting Preview

The Military Bowl will feature two teams who finished the regular season strong and, as a result, find themselves returning to the familiar territory of a bowl game.

Temple had a good year with an 8-4 record, including a 5-3 mark in the American Athletic Conference, finishing third in the league’s East Division.

North Carolina had to fight to win its last two games to become bowl-eligible and was successful as it finished with a 6-6 overall record. This is the first time that these schools have met for football.

North Carolina opened as a six-point favorite but has since seen that line shift down to -4.5 on MyBookie.ag.

The line for the over/under betting total is set at 53 points, which is relatively low given the offenses involved. On the moneyline, Temple is being given +160 odds as the underdog.

Tar Heels Look For Offensive Spark

The Tar Heels’ first season under Mack Brown as head coach was a bit of a roller coaster. They started the year with a victory against their rival, South Carolina, then came within just a point of upsetting the defending national champion Clemson Tigers.

North Carolina won its last two games by a combined margin of 80 points, so it may be peaking at the right time to get a bowl win.

The offense has seen more success in the new system, as the Tar Heels are averaging 31.2 points a game. North Carolina has really seen the rushing attack take off, as it accounts for 184 yards per game.

The 6.5 yards per play is the highest that North Carolina has seen in the last three seasons.

Key Players

Running backs Michael Williams and Javonte Williams are leading the way with over 1,700 yards and eight touchdowns between the two of them.

True freshman quarterback Sam Howell is the one who runs the show after a stellar first campaign. His 3,347 yards and .603 completion percentage put him near the top of the ACC in both categories.

Howell has a 35:7 touchdown-to-interception ratio to go along with it, and he had 401 yards and three touchdowns through the air in the Tar Heels’ last game.

Owls Wonder Who Will Step Up On Defense

Temple will rely on its defense to keep it in this game, as it is stingy, giving up just 23.2 points per contest. In the rush-heavy AAC, the Owls only gave up 13 rushing touchdowns, which was the second-best total in the league.

The Owls gave up 4.8 yards per play, which is down from 6.9 last year.

Defensive end Quincy Roche saw massive success to end the year, as he amassed 13 tackles for loss and 10 sacks over the final four games. He had 18 and 13, respectively, on the season as a whole to earn the AAC Defensive Player Of The Year award

Stellar Defense

The Temple red-zone defense has been stellar as it is holding teams to touchdowns on less than 50 percent of their trips inside the 20, which ranks in the top 45 teams in the country.

The Owls’ offense will have to put more points on the board, as they only average 27 a game. The running game has been almost nonexistent with 3.8 yards a carry and 140 yards per game.

The passing game is where most of the focus is after 11.8 yards per play through the air. Temple has scored 25 times when airing the ball out.

North Carolina vs. Temple Military Bowl 2019 Betting Prediction

North Carolina is a 4.5-point favorite over Temple, but the smart money is to stick with the Owls in this one. They are being given +4.5 to start and have the better defense in this matchup.

Temple’s ability to keep North Carolina from scoring touchdowns when it gets in the red zone will be the difference. Temple is 5-1 ATS in their last six games. North Carolina is just 2-3 in their last five. We think Temple +4.5 is the clear pick for the Military Bowl.
