Tampa Bay Rays – A. Cobb -110 at Pittsburgh Pirates – T. Williams -110 Total: 9 runs

The Rays head to Pittsburgh in the first game of an inter-league series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tampa Bay has played increasingly better baseball as of late. Although they have lost their last two games, they’re sitting in third-place in the AL East and are just three games back of the division-leading Yankees. The Pirates are six games under .500 after taking two of three games at St. Louis this weekend. They’re still in the Wild Card race, but each game is critical at this point for their postseason hopes.

Tampa will throw Alex Cobb against the Pirates tonight. He’s been just average this season, but has thrown seven quality starts in his last ten games. Pittsburgh counters with Trevor Williams. He’s come out of the bullpen to start this season. He was shaky early on, but is coming off his best start of the year at Miller Park. He struck out seven batters and allowed three runs.

Betting Action

There has not been much movement on this one since opening. The Pirates a slight favorite at some betting sites. However, the majority of wagers have come in on the Rays – yet the line has not moved. The total on this game sits at 9 runs. It is juiced on the over at most sportsbooks.

Line movement (or lack thereof) makes me favor the Pirates. Cobb isn’t exactly a fearsome opponent and his advanced metrics do suggest he is due to regress. The Pirates also have several powerful lefty bats and an offense it is a bit underrated when looking at traditional statistics. They’re also underrated team based on their roster. They may not be a playoff team at year’s end, but they’re still going to be in the hunt at least until the All-Star break.
