MLB Betting 8-18-17 – Free Picks
The MLB season is winding down, but divisions across baseball, for the most part, are still awfully close. Then there are the Wild Card standings. We have a full slate of baseball tonight. There is just one NFL preseason game this evening, but a much larger slate on Saturday.
St. Louis Cardinals – C. Martinez -118 at Pittsburgh Pirates – T. Williams +108 Total: 8 o-120 Runs
The Pirates are falling out of contention quickly as their record has now dropped to 58-63 and 5.5 games out of the NL Central. The Cardinals, on the other hand, have played excellent baseball in recent weeks. They’re now just 1.5 games behind the Cubs who lead the Central.
Carlos Martinez will take the mound for St. Louis. He’s been on a roll lately, winning three out of his last four starts and striking out seven or more hitters in four straight. On the year, he has a 3.56 ERA. Pittsburgh will go with Trevor Williams, who has surprised in his first full year in the majors. He has back to back quality starts. Williams has a 4.19 ERA on the year, but a 2.95 ERA since the All-Star break.
There has not been much movement on this game as of this writing. The odds opened around -118 in favor of the Cardinals and haven’t changed at major sportsbooks just yet. The total opened at eight runs and is juiced at -120 at most betting sites.
Pittsburgh is imploding as we head down to the final weeks of the season. Williams has emerged as a reliable starter for the Pirates, but his peripheral stats don’t show much more than an average pitcher. His K/9 is just 6.69, and his BB/9 is 2.82.
The Cardinals offense has fought life in recent weeks and will have no problems dealing with a pitcher who is playing on over his head. Martinez is also far more talented on a roll. Take St. Louis as a small favorite on the road.
