Monday Night Football Betting Odds – NY Jets Vs Detroit Lions Predictions
Both the NY Jets and Detroit Lions are eager to see rookie QB Sam Darnold take the field, but for two different reasons. The Jets are hoping to see what should be the face of the franchise for the next ten years. The Lions are anxious to give the rookie Darnold his first “Welcome to the NFL moment”. New York and Detroit will square off in the first Monday Night Football matchup of the 2018 NFL season on September 10, in Michigan.
The Oddsmakers opened the Lions as 6.5-point favorites versus the Jets and the game’s total opened at 43.5. The betting lined moved to 7-points and stayed that way for about two weeks. It came back down to 6.5-points, giving Detroit a chance to cover if they win by at least a touchdown. Our odds below are from SportsBetting.ag Sportsbook. There is plenty of excitement in the Big Apple to see their new boy toy. Sam Darnold was the only rookie QB to win the starting job out of the five picked in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. Are they rushing their new franchise quarterback or is this the right move? Darnold will become the youngest Week 1 starting quarterback in NFL history (21 years, 97 days), but his in an inconvenient position. The Jets roster doesn’t have a playmaker outside the numbers, other than WR Robbie Anderson. He still is trying to make a name for himself.
NY is coming off consecutive 5-11 season. Head coach Todd Bowles is not on the hot seat just yet, but a bad start can quickly send him there. The Jets will be mostly a running team trying to ease in Darnold’s transition to the pros. Tailbacks Crowell and Powell are good enough to carry the load at least for the 1st weeks of the season.
My issue with this matchup is New York will have to put plenty of points to keep up with the Lions, especially with the game being played in Detroit. Sam Darnold threw 13 interceptions in his last season with the USC Trojans. He will learn very quickly this is harder than College Football. With Bowles as a head coach, the team has been a lousy bet as visitors. The Jets are 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 road games and 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a road underdog of 3.5-10.0 points. Not to be a party pooper, but a rookie QB making his debut on Monday Night Football could be an overwhelming stage. It just looks like a bad matchup for New York on both sides of the ball.
What’s the latest Detroit Lions betting form to face the Jets?
I still can’t believe Matt Patricia got a head coaching job after his pitiful performance as a New England Patriots defensive coordinator in Super Bowl 53. My guess is he already had convinced the Lions to give him the coaching vacancy before that game. Patricia inherits a team loaded with talent, especially in the offensive side of the football. QB Matthew Stafford is a Top-10 quarterback in the NFL, although he hasn’t taken Detroit to the Promised Land. Stafford has a solid connection with wideouts Marvin Jones and Golden Tate in the passing game. It’s one of the most entertaining trios in the NFL.
The problem is they have always been awful running the football. The organization needed to be aggressive. They went and picked up the three-time Super Bowl-winning running back LeGarrette Blount in free agency. Blount should take care of the running query Detroit has had since Stafford has been in the league. Rookie tailback Kerryon Johnson, who was drafted in the second round, will see plenty of touches as well. A more balanced attacked is a great way to keep Stafford fresh. The Lions offense will have a slight touch of unpredictably in 2018. It also helps, at least for week 1, that the Lions are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Monday games and 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games as a favorite.
The play for the MNF game between Jets vs. Lions?
I’m surprised the betting line is as low as 6.5-points for this game. I get why the Jets are excited about having Sam Darnold. He will be a good quarterback at some point in his career, but he’s not there yet.
The betting stats suggest the Lions are a solid bet playing on Monday Night Football. They are the most talented team on both sides of the ball, and they play at home. Detroit will win by at least ten points. Bet the Lions -6.5.
