Navy Vs. Army Prediction – College Football Picks | Betting Odds
Before we officially enter the bowl season, the Navy Midshipmen looks to remind us why this is their annual favorite game of the season, when they face the Army Knights in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. MyBookie.ag listed Army as the one favorite by a touchdown. In different platforms, the betting line opened with the Knights as 6.5-point favorites. Across most sportsbooks, the line is currently at seven. 61% of the betting public is picking Army to win and cover the spread. The game total is at 40 points after opened 41.
Navy Midshipmen vs. Army Knights Predictions
We know how this works. Both teams run the option offense and look to control the game with their tempo while eating the clock. The fundamental difference between one and the other is that Army can actually make plays on third down. Since putting Oklahoma on their heels, Army has won seven games in a row. That day against the Sooners showed their playing style would be a headache for the rest of the season. The Knights ran for 261 yards against the Colgate Raiders last week. Even though those numbers are below their season average, they did control the ball possession almost 12 minutes more than their opponents. Army converted 8 of 12 third-down situations in that win.
Navy has struggled a lot lately, despite having the same formula as Army. They have lost eight of their last nine games, including a 29-28 defeat to Tulane last week. The Midshipmen ran only for 117 yards against the Green Wave and completed just two of their 15 third-down situations. To say Navy has been a disappointment this season is to fall short. Their run option hasn’t worked as expected and their defense has been porous. The Midshipmen allow 34.9 points per game, and they only score 28.9 PPG.
This might not be a tangible thing to consider, but this game will be the last time Navy sees a lot of their current players on the field. The Midshipmen are not a bowl-eligible team, and this meeting against Army will be their last of the season. With the recent passing of former president George H. W. Bush and current president Donald Trump in the stands, they need to put together a good showing. Navy has the upper hand winning eight of their previous ten meetings against Army, but they have dropped the last two in the series. Army doesn’t have to rely on the intangibles. They just need to do what they do best. The Knights are the best team on third-downs in the entire College Football map. They convert 57.1% of their tries. Alabama, the best team in the nation, exchange a 52.8% rate. Another underrated feature about Army is their defense.
Because they tend to have the ball so much; their defense doesn’t suffer against any opponent. The Knights only allowed 18.7 points per game. Over the last three games, they have just given up 13.6 points per game as average. To put in perspective, they held Oklahoma to 28 points, and the Sooners needed overtime to reach that number. This is a rivalry game, and the last three meetings have been decided by less than a touchdown difference. History suggests taking the points, but Army looks so much better on every department. I’m going with the hottest team on the field and the one that will play Houston at the Armed Forces Bowl. What’s the play? Bet Army -7.
