The Hornets are coming into a situation that few teams going into the Wells Fargo Center have had to deal with the past few seasons – the 76ers are on a winning streak.
Charlotte is in desperate need of a win after started the season off with a bang, only to falter over the past month. They’ve lost three straight games and five out of their last six contests. After losing 121-114 to the Rockets on Tuesday, their record fell to 20-19. The Hornets are just holding onto a playoff berth in the East if the season ended today, ranking 7th in the conference.
The 76ers are still in the doldrums of the Eastern Conference, but they’re playing much better as of late. They have won two straight games, including a buzzer-beating victory over the Knicks on Wednesday night. Philadelphia is still far out of the playoff race, but there seems to be real hope for the franchise now with the emergence of Joel Embiid.
The odds opened with Hornets as -4.5 road favorites in this game. They’ve gotten nearly 80 percent of wagers so far, which has moved the odds to -5.5 at most online sportsbooks.
Charlotte chance of breaking their losing streak has been their best in a while tonight. They’re a far better team than the 76ers and have faced a string of rough matchups with on their West Coast road trip that has resulted in a lot of defeats.
It’s just the opposite for Philadelphia. Their four recent wins were all against sub .500 teams, many of them the bottom feeders of the league, such as the Nets, Timberwolves, and Nuggets.
Charlotte will come in focused tonight with an extra day of rest and should win this game handily. In my opinion, a double-digit victory is likely. Jump on this line earlier as I suspect it will move more in their favor as we get closer to tip.
Pick: Hornets -5.5
Cleveland Cavaliers at Sacramento Kings -6.5 Total: 211
After starting their road trip out West with two wins, the Cavaliers need to break a two-game slide as they head into Sacramento to face the Kings.
The defending Champions have lost two games straight, mostly in part to poor shooting. They have scored less than 93 points in their most recent defeats, including a 106-87 loss at Portland on Wednesday evening. Cleveland still holds the top spot in the Eastern Conference, with a 28-10 overall mark.
Sacramento hasn’t played well in the past week or so, but they are showing plenty of improvement over last season and are in the mix for a playoff spot. They improved their record to 16-22 after defeating the visiting Piston 100-94 on Tuesday night.
The Cavs are the most lopsided bet on the board today. Over 90 percent of wagers have come in on Cleveland so far. However, despite that, the odds have moved from Cavaliers -7 to -6.5.
It’s easy to like Sacramento in this spot. First, we have reverse line movement in our favor and secondly, the Cavaliers just simply haven’t been good on the road this year. They’re 10-7 on the road versus 18-3 at home.
The Kings can score the rock as good as any team in the league and Cleveland isn’t exactly known for their defense. Their shooting woes haven’t gotten better just yet, and this isn’t the ideal spot to break out. There’s also the potential for a look-ahead spot for Cleveland, as they face the Warriors at Oracle on Monday on Martin Luther King Day.
Pick: Kings +6.5
