The Pelicans likely aren’t a playoff team. In fact, they’re one of the worst teams in the NBA, currently. However, since Jrue Holiday came back from his wife’s health issues – New Orleans has won two straight. Holiday was fantastic in the 116-104 overtime win at Charlotte on Saturday, pushing the Pels’ record to 4-10 on the season.
The Hawks are one of the best teams in the East. However, they’re currently in the midst of a two-game skid, after losing 94-104 at the Knicks on Sunday. Atlanta is still second the Eastern Conference with a 9-4 record.
Betting action on this game has been relatively even on both sides and totals, but we have seen significant movement. The total opened at 208 but has moved to 210 or 210.5. The spread opened at Atlanta -8 but has moved to -8.5 at most sites.
Wins against the struggling Trail Blazers and Hornets is one thing, but facing the Hawks at home is a much tougher test. However, I do think this offense has been unleashed with Jrue in the lineup. All-Star Anthony Davis needed a true point guard, and now he finally has one.
I lean towards the Hawks in this game, but I think the better play is on the total. The Pelicans offense is much improved with Holiday back in the lineup, something the market maybe hasn’t fully adjusted to yet. However, their defense, which is among the worst in the league, doesn’t get too much of a bump.
If you’re feeling ambitious, go ahead and add Hawks -8.5 to your card, but for this one – I think the play is the over 210.
Pick: Over 210

Oklahoma City Thunder -3 (-110) at Los Angeles Lakers +3 (-110) Total: 221

Two Western Conference teams make up the nightcap on NBA TV.
The Thunder travel to Los Angeles to take on the Lakers at Staples Center. The Kevin Durant-less Thunder haven’t been quite as good as last season, but they’re still right in the thick of it in the conference with a 6-4 record. They last played on Sunday, losing an overtime game 115-111 to the Pacers at Chesapeake Energy Arena. They have dropped 5 out of their last seven games after starting the season 6-1.
The Lakers start to the season has surprised just about everyone. They were one of the worst teams in the league last year, but under new head coach, Luke Walton, they’re playing much better basketball. Los Angeles is coming off an 118-110 home loss to the Bulls on Sunday. They’re currently at .500, with a 7-7 record.
The odds opened with Oklahoma City as -1.5 favorites, but have moved to OKC -3 after over 70 percent of bets have come in on the Thunder. The total has jumped from a 220 opener to 221 at most sportsbooks online.
I’m not here to tell you that Lakers aren’t vastly improved this season. They are. However, they’re still not likely a playoff team in the conference, and I suspect they are playing over their head. Yes, their roster is young, and some improvement has been shown, but this team isn’t much different than the one that won 17 games last season.
I don’t love taking road favorites, but Oklahoma City should have no issues getting a win tonight.
Pick: Thunder -3
