The Heat just finished a long road trip but will face a tough test in their first game back in South Beach with the Houston Rockets coming to town.
Miami hopes that a return to their home arena may give them some relief from a tough road trip. They have lost their last four games and were just 1-5 on their recent trip. They have won just one game in their last 12. The Heat were last in action on Friday at Milwaukee, a game they lost 116-108. They have the second-worst record in the NBA at 11-30.
Houston is having an excellent first year under new head coach, Mike D’Antoni. They’re third in the Western Conference with a 32-11 record after defeating the New Jersey Nets 137-112. This seems like an easy matchup for Houston, but these teams have split their season series so far.
The Rockets took care of Miami earlier in the year in Houston by 13 points, but the Heat blew out Houston by 20 points in their next meeting.
The odds opened with the Heat as -8 favorites, but that has moved to -7.5, despite over 80 percent of bets coming in on Miami.
Sometimes you must take the worst teams to turn a profit betting sports. This is one of those nights. The Heat are a weak basketball team, but reverse line movement makes this spot a bit more tolerable.
Let’s also remember, this matchup isn’t as poor as one might think. Miami is still a good defensive team. The Rockets are a poor defensive team. Whiteside can stop Harden’s paint penetration, at least, somewhat.
The home squad should keep this one close, or win the game outright.
Pick: Heat +8.5
Minnesota Timberwolves at San Antonio Spurs – 11.5 Total: 200.5
The Timberwolves head to the Alamodome on Tuesday night to take on the Spurs in a game where both teams are looking to rebound from a previous defeat.
Minnesota ended a three-game winning streak with an 87-98 loss to Dallas on Sunday in Texas. The loss dropped them further down the Western Conference standings. They now have a 12-27 record and are for all intents and purposes eliminated from postseason contention. They will face the Clippers on Thursday before heading back to Minneapolis.
The Spurs are coming off a rough stretch of uncharacteristic play. They have two losses in last three games, including a 105-108 defeat by the visiting Phoenix Suns on Saturday. San Antonio is still one of the top teams in the West, however. Their 31-9 mark is second behind only the Golden State Warriors.
The odds opened with the Spurs as -10.5 favorites. Over 80 percent of wagers have come in on the Spurs since opening. This has pushed the odds to Spurs -11.5 at just about every sportsbook online.
This should be an easy spot for the Spurs to dominate. A veteran team like San Antonio plays hard every night, but they’re particularly focused after a loss and are a dominant team at home. The Timberwolves are one of the league’s worst defensive teams and will be picked apart by the Spurs.
Pick: Spurs -11
