Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs -15 Total: 213.5
The Spurs continue to be a dominant force at home. They will welcome the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night as they look for their sixth straight victory at home.
The Suns are near the bottom of the Western Conference, just a single game better than the Dallas Mavericks. Phoenix’s record fell to 9-22, after losing 131-115 on Monday Night at Houston. They have just two wins in their last seven games.
San Antonio, despite losing Tim Duncan to retirement last season, have continued their dominant run this season. The Spurs improved to 25-6 on the season after winning 119-100 against the visiting Chicago Bulls on Sunday.
The Spurs opened as -13.5 favorites in this game. Action has been slightly in favor of San Antonio since opening. They are now -15 at just about every sportsbook. The total opened at 213.5, one of the highest on the slate. It still stands 213.5 at most bookmakers.
I lean towards the Spurs in this game, but that’s not the play I’m after. The total is a lot more interesting. San Antonio just isn’t the same team defensively this season. Part of that is Duncan’s departure, but the other may be coaching philosophy. They look to push the tempo more than year than previous seasons.
Phoenix is an absolute sieve defensively, but they can score. They’re also one of the fastest-paced teams in the league. If this game stays remotely close, it will likely go over the total. However, even in a blowout, we could easily see a score like 120-105 for the Spurs, which would put the game over.
Pick: Over 213.5
The Raptors head out West to take on the Warriors at Oracle Arena, the toughest place in the NBA to play. Golden State is coming off a rare loss, so they should be extra motivated in this contest to notch a victory.
Toronto is on their third game of a Western Conference road trip. Their first two games resulted in victories against the Jazz and Trail Blazers. The win at Portland was a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 95-91 victory and improve their record to 22-8 on the season. The Raptors are currently just second in the Eastern Conference, behind the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Golden State lost 109-108 at Cleveland on Christmas Day in dramatic fashion, giving them plenty of rest for tonight’s contest, and plenty of motivation. The loss was their first since December 10th, at Memphis. Despite the loss, the Warriors still lead the NBA and Western Conference in record, with a 27-5 mark.
The odds opened with Golden State as -9 favorites. These odds have moved to Warriors -9.5. The total has jumped from 225 to 227.
This is a dream spot for Golden State. They may end up not covering this game, but I will happily bet them in this scenario every time. They’re coming off a rough loss, but are well rested, and they are nearly unstoppable at home. Take the home squad and lay the points.
Pick: Warriors -9.5
